[edit] Getting There
Arriving in Duluth on I-35 North, take the 21st Ave. East exit. Turn Left at the end of the off-ramp and proceed straight up the hill on 21st Ave. East. Take a right at the top of the hill when the road merges with Woodland Ave. Stay on Woodland Ave. for approximately 2.3 miles. After you go through a stop sign at the intersection of Woodland Ave and Oxford St. you will start to go up another hill, and midway up that hill you will see signs on the left that say "Hartley Park". Turn left, and you're at the Nature Center.
[edit] History
Hartley Park's history is long and varied. When G. G. Hartley began to purchase land for a farming enterprise at the end of the 19th century, the land of the park was unpopulated mixed forest on the outskirts of the city of Duluth. Hartley grew both his dairy and produce businesses into one of the most lucrative farms in Minnesota. After Hartley died, however, things began to go wrong, and rezoning eliminated the farm's profit margin, it began a steady fall into abandonment that culminated in the city claiming it and turning it into an urban park in 1941.
[edit] The Details
Duluth's Hartley Park features 660 acres of diverse forest, field, pond and wetland habitats. A Duluth city park, Hartley has many kilometers of skiing and hiking trails which include overlooks of Lake Superior from rocky outcrops. Hartley Park's trails are open to hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing, and dog walking.
