Thanks to a Buck Hill tree stump I've had the opportunity to acquire a second set of wheels. I'm thinking I should set them up with mud tires, as that seems to be all this series races in. I'm wondering what some of you experienced folk do for mud tires. What brands, models, sizes do you find works best?

I'm new at this. I'd never ridden a bicycle in mud before River Falls, so I really don't know what to buy. My plan is to go tubeless, if that matters.

As the GHC was a first year race, I would like some feedback from those who raced it on what you liked and didn't. I'll give you some help with criticisms because I know a few things we need to correct.

1. The Kids Comp course was ridiculously too long and I apologize to parents who had to wait forever for their kids to arrive. Next year their race will not cross 7 Bridges Rd and will just use mostly ski trail and a bit of singletrack on the east side.

2. The sport course was clearly too long as well. Obviously the mud had something to do with the extended times but on a dry course it still would have exceeded the 1h15min target.

3. Parking fiasco. As we know know Lester River Rd is alternative side parking so we will figure out which side it's going to be, have that on the race map sent out months and advance along with other good parking locations on that map.

One question I have, and it's difficult to answer because the ski trail was so wet, is do you think if the course was dry the ski trail descent is worth having each lap or do you prefer having it only as a prologue and finish and have laps in the singletrack like we did with the shortened version this year?

I hope what the police officer told a friend of mine about the race organizers calling them in to report improper parking is untrue. It understand that they can't have mayhem parking, but seems to me they could have had the race organizer make an announcement about moving cars. Not happy and I know I'm not the only one, obviously the $21 is not the point for me...clearly it IS for the city though.

So my meteorology isn't the best and indeed the course is wetter than expected. The sun didn't show until the afternoon today and the ski trail sections of the course are very wet. Most of the singletrack is in good shape as expected. On the west side there are some wet areas, but most is in good shape. The east side is just about perfectly tacky.

Because of the wetness of the ski trails and our desire not to trash them, the race directors are going to pre-ride the course tomorrow morning and make some decisions on if some of the ski trail should be omitted. Already we have removed Loop I from the top section of ski trail. If we find that the ski trails are going to be wet enough that they will be damaged by 900 sets of tires going over them, we will most likely just use them as a leadout and finish, and each lap will consist of 95% singletrack. Not a bad thing by any means.

Bring your mud tires, but don't expect another Dirtspanker. Riders were finishing the pre-ride today muddy but their bikes weren't caked with it like at Mont du. it's really not even a fair comparision. There will be wet spots, but most of the trail will be in great shape, particularly the singletrack, which as I said before, is almost perfect in many places.

See you guys in the morning.

Some Duluth road construction is going to make getting into the park a little interesting this year as a bridge closure on London Rd is rerouting all traffic on Superior St, which is where Lester Park is located. Expect a bit of a log jam for a block or two around the park. Plan for an extra 10-15 minutes of your commute to the race.

The main parking lot is on Lester River Rd, on the east side of the park. If the parking lot is full you can park along the side of Lester River RdThere is also another road, Occidental, that is west of the park that you can park on as well. Side strees that come into Occidental are fair game too.

There will be lots of traffic on Superior St, but you can park on Superior St if you can find an open spot.

I've been racing Sport for years and even did a few races at Expert class about 10 years ago (not very well, tho) but now find myself at 50 years old, recovering from broken ribs and 2 knee surgeries, consistantly at the back of the pack and not feeling very competitive.

I love the personal challenge of the length of the Sport class and have never DNF'd but am wondering about dropping to Citizen next year, partly because my 13-year old is in that class and my daughter may start racing next year. My decision is based on my kids and also two questions: (1) Does anyone in Sport care if I'm totally sucking on the last lap of every race? (2) Is it sandbagging if I do decide to drop?
