WWW.MORCMTB.ORG mtb classes will begin this coming Sunday!!
Basic maintenence/Repairs and more!!
Sundays 4:30pm till we're done and then maybe a ride
Sessions will go from this Sunday until It gets nice out and we all wanna ride at 4:30, then Ill set another time/day.
Classes will be held at:
St Paul Cycles
2024 Ford Parkway
St Paul, MN 55116
651-690-1862
Its on Ford Parkway up the hill on the St Paul side of the river by the Falls, in a lil' strip mall off Cleveland ave. Strip mall has Blockbuster on the corner.
I attatched a map, its a very rough quick drawing with a very off scale and such, so if that does not do it for you call the shop and someone will get ya directions no problem.
We will begin at 4:30 and go for roughly 2-3 hours maybe less or more. Then Id like to get a ride going after as well. The River Valley and Battle Creek are the closest places to ride, so bring helmets, lights and such!!!
These classes will be FREE of charge and you will receive a 20% discount on anything during class time, all I ask is that people RSVP me via email at nigel7780@hotmail.com and please put "morc class" in the subject line. All I ask is that at least 2 people come and anyone coming try and bring your bike if you can, and car pool too if possible :)
So Sundays 4:30, possible rides after. Bring bike and ride stuff, and any and all questions you have. RSVP via email and call for directions if needed.
See ya'll there

I know this is for bike repair, but I didn't see it mentioned. People might think it's a riding lesson........or I could be wrong....please specify.

How much notice do you need for the RSVP? I don't always know how my weekends will fall out until the last minute.
But otherwise I am very interested in showing up for these.

Doug,
I plan on coming this Sunday. If you need it I have 2 out of true wheels, 1 disc, and a rear deraileur/shiftcable problem that you can use as demo. I do not know how to fix them myself, thus I Plan on showing up.
See you Sunday.

Todays class went well and thanks to those that were able to make it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To those that missed, I did get yer emails, and thanks for letting me know, hope to see ya next week at 4:30.
Topics covered today were:
Drivetrain cleaning and lubrication (different lubes and why)
derailleur adjustments, front and rear
changing a flat tire
We are going to try and make this an ongoing class, that will build upon itself as we go. Meaning today was the start, and we will just add on topics as we get going and get to more in depth repairs as we go on.
ANY and ALL individual questions will be covered as we go, so please ask and do not be afraid to come!! We will go over what was missed the previous week at the start of each class for those that were not able to attend.
The rain put a damper on the ride tonight as well :( But for next time if we can get a night ride in after please bring your bike and lights and we'll head out for some fun.
Thanks to those that came, hope I was able to learn ya something in my ramblings (I know I tend to wander in thoughts, so bare with me) and I hope to see ya'll next week :)

Great Class!!! Thanks Doug!
I've performed all the things we went over tonight at least a number of times but I went because I wanted to know the tricks and techniques the bike shop techs use. And on each thing we went over I learned something new. When someone does this for a living you know they know the tricks of the trade and Doug is no exception.
Great Stuff Doug!!! See ya next week.

I totally agree.. I learned so many little tricks tonight - even with some of the stuff that *should* be basic.
Great stuff.. can't wait until next week!

I agree, that was a good class. I very much enjoyed it, and it was good to meet some of you guys that I talk to online here too... nice to put a face with scottish crest, airplane, or what-have-you...:)
I agree with phillip. I've been doing all my own maintenance, stumbling though barnetts manual (which is excellent BTW), but seeing it done by a pro really made things click. I can follow things step by step in the manual, but things didn't *click* and make sense like they did last night. Plus, some of the tips and tricks are really nice.
Great class last nite Douglas!

We should have been talking this up more all week... but boy am I looking forward to today's class!
Just a few short hours I learned more little tips and insights than I have picked up in a long time. Mr. Holtz teaches a good class and is performing a great service to MORC members.
If you haven't been, I'd highly suggest taking time to get to one of these classes. The class was fairly informal, but that let us request things we wanted to see him cover.
I now know how to adjust my shifting.. finally! Seems I was over-complicating things - all I needed was the secret of where to start (and to always use XTR pre-stretched cables hehe).
Hope to see everyone there tonight at 4:30!!!

Well, I hope to be there again. I might be sucked into debugging some VPN issues with work, but take that as it comes. So far so good anyway:)
Yes, I thought last weeks class was great. Even aside from the learning, it's good to meet and hang with some of the guys I chat with here.

Here are a couple pictures (more in the photo gallery) from tonights class held by Douglas Holtz at St. Paul Cycles (free for MORC members!) See more details about the class below (most importantly Doug's first post with directions, times etc.)
Tonight we learned about brakes (all types) - tightening, maintenance, fluid replacement etc. Next week we're going over bottom brackets and headsets.
If you haven't been to Doug's classes, you should! There is often a night ride following the class.
Thanks Doug for teaching us!

Again, another great class.
Douglas, I can't thank you enough for putting on the class. It's real cool that you take personal time to hold our hands on this stuff.
One of these times I've gotta take you up on the offer for a nite ride.
Thanks again,

Did my first night ride with Mr. Douglas Holtz and Mr. Don Youngdahl after the bike maintenance class... Wow, what a great time. It makes a trail you've ridden countless times seem brand new. Now all I need to do is make sure to wear a bit warmer clothing. I need some wind resistent outer wear. Doug has agreed to be my winter riding fashion consultant :)

Can't understand the previous comments about it being cold down there last night - my lightly layered body sweated up a storm & I drank about a quart and a half of water on the way home to re-hydrate. Maybe it's my high body fat content, or the strenuous effort to try and keep up with the young guys.
Don Youngdahl
I should be there tonight. Planning to ride afterwards also.

Learned everything we needed to know about headset maintenance tonight... another great class! Next week - bottom brackets.
If you haven't made one yet, please come on out to Doug's great classes.. you don't have to be at one of the previous ones to learn each topic.
Good stuff - thanks again...
yep - Great stuff. Thanks Doug!
Also, the night ride at Battle Creek aftwards was excellent. I enjoyed riding with you guys last night. Hopefully the first of many night rides this fall :D
It was a good time last night. The class was good and the ride afterward was a hoot!
Good to meet you, Craig and Jason.
There will definitely be more night rides!

Yes, again it was a great class, very educational and good to meet people.
Some time I will have to borrow some equipment and go for a nite ride with you guys. It sounds like a blast. Unfortunately, it has either been too cold for me or like last night I had other commitments.
glad you guys had fun last nite.

Another great class tonight, this time we did bottom brackets. Thanks again, Douglas.
Small group this time!!! Next week it sounds like we'll be doing hubs (one I really want to see). It's too bad I won't be able to go to that one.
If you haven't been to a class yet, don't miss out. It's a great opportunity to learn some great maintenance stuff, get questions answered and hang out. Plus you can pick up any gear or parts and supplies you need all in one shot and get great deals to boot.

Yup, it was a great class. Was sad to see so few show up this time. We only covered one topic, but then discussed many other things - did some chain fixing, what to buy or not to buy etc.
Doug knows his stuff... and the people that show up are all great to hang with on a Sunday late afternoon/early evening.
Come on out if you haven't yet... see ya there next week!

I hope you feel better soon, I had that crap a week or so ago when we had that beautiful riding weather. One of my co-workers here who was bragging that he never gets sick (and I can't remember him taking even one sick day in the past couple of years I've worked with him) called in today, and he sounded like hell - definately a lot more than the bottle flu.

Forks went well. There were only a couple of us there though, so I think we'll cover it more in a few weeks.
It was kind of a sad night. One showed up with a cracked frame (me) and another showed up with a cracked body... I'll let him admit and tell his story...
