Although it didn't take much to convince myself, I'd decided to get a new bike.
I've settled for something around the $800 price point. This will be my first "real" bike. Anyway, I've done some internet research and come up with these bikes:
2004 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo
2003 Haro ICS 4.0
2003 Specialized Rockhopper Comp
Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts (or any other bikes I should consider.)
Right now, I think it will come down to test ride between the Hoo Koo and ICS.
Also, I'm fairly new to the area, so are there any specific shops I should try to patron? Or will throw in a sweet deal on some accessories if I buy a bike?
Thanks in advance and I'll let you know what I end up with.

I think the norco charger would be a good bike to look at or stick with the gary fisher!!! go to http://www.norco.com/bikes/2003bikes/charger.htm

Of the bikes you listed I'd definitely go with the Gary Fisher. But, have you considered the entry model Specialized StumpJumper? Roughly same componentry as the Gary Fisher. The RockHopper's OK, but a bit on the heavy side.
As for shops, check out the Rocky Mountain bikes at Freewheel in Minneapolis. Freewheel is easily the *best* bike shop in the cities. They'd treat you quite well from the start. :)

The Rockhopper is pretty much out of the running. I figured I'd give Specialized a ride though and see what comments I got. The base Stumpjumper costs more than I'd like to spend so that's why I left it out.
Any thoughts on Haro? Honestly, I don't know much about 'em, but it seems like a good bike.
Thanks for the heads-up on the Norco. I think you made my decision tougher. ;)
I started leaning toward the Fisher after seeing the 2004 specs, but I want to ride a few different bikes to seal the deal.

I understand you have done alot of research but I am suprised Giant was not included. For the money they have been offering the best prices for what you get. Most of there bikes are suprisingly really light for even the less than $1,000 models.

You could also check out http://www.ibexbikes.com.
I've never bought anything from them but there are some positive reviews on mtbr.com.
On the other hand, its always nice to support local shops. Also, they usually will take care of any problems that come up. Especially useful if your not mechanically inclined or don't have garage space.

The Novara Ponderosa is on sale for 549, down from 700 at Rei. It has the better components than the Rockhopper Comp(XT Derailer, carbon handlebars, seatpost), is cheaper, and lighter, what a steal! You can also test ride one at Rei!

I concur. The reviews for the Giant XTC2 on mtbreview.com are quite good. It sounds like a good XC bike, if that's what you're looking for.
Good luck!
