OK, you know the situation:
You've just done 4 laps around the X-XX loop without stopping. You did a backflip over the tabletop, bunny hopped Jan's rock and cleared the whole thing, rode a wheelie across the log roll ... well, OK, a little hyperbole there. But, the point is, you've been riding like an absolute stud. Yay for you.
Then, you decide to exit for the night via the X loop. You get to the intersection of X and XX and see a group of guys (or, worse yet, girls) hanging out for a water/chat break.
What do you do?
WHAT
DO
YOU
DO!?!??
:)

I'm not so vain that I need to impress a bunch of shmucks, be they female or male. I voted to nod, say 'hey' and mosey on out of there on X.

Ahhh.. I get it now. Would have helped if I read the original post.
Yea, I'd continue out the X...
The way I figure it, nobody out there really knows what lap you are on or what you are doing as part of your ride. Finishing the X is never a bad thing - heck, for all they know you're heading out the X only to do another lap (I've done it many times)
Good question though... interesting...

I do like to show off sometimes, I will admit that. But, I don't really go out of my way to do it.
A friend of mine once said, "Your not a show off, you are just expressing yourself in a different way than most people."
Okay, whatever. I can bunny hop the chain in the lot at Leb with platform pedals. I have done it a few times just to do it and show John and others that it can be done without clipless. Now if I was a true show off, I would do it at every chance I could to show many riders what I can do. Here is the problem: I am by no means the best rider there is, so someone somewhere will be able to bunnyhop the chain higher than me or they might even 180 over it (yes, I have thought about doing it). So, I may be an above average rider, but not nearly close to being one of the best there is. So being a show off would give people some impression that I think I am better than them. I don't feel that way, so I choose to try to stay low key..........which is not easy to do ........:D

I voted with the majority cuz my ego is okay with that.
Honestly I would have to check out what they were riding before I made my final decision. If they're on some pimped out rides, I'd probably dive into the XX in the hopes that they would try to keep up with me and then I would drop them like a water bottle on a rocky descent. :D :D
Truly Honestly, I'd probably nod and keep my original plan of finishing up on the X, but I'd add the beginner loop because I felt that they were talking about me after I went by.

Yeah, I'd just nod and exit out the X loop, too ... I'd have to side with Grizzly about if they were on pimped out rides I'd be more tempted to take XX, but that's only if I had just done but one X-XX loop, not 3 or 4 :).
I think the thought does enter everyone's head, though: "Gosh, I wonder if they think I'm a wuss for not turning left right there!" You may immediately say to yourself "NAH!" or "Heh, what a silly thought" after that, but the thought's still there. :)
To make things really interesting I would stop, get off my bike say hi and walk over the logs w/ bike, trip a few times, scream a few profanities and exit out of the trail after getting around the corner and out of sight...
Actually I wouldn't really care what anyone thought and probably exit via the X.

Just do each lap differently, mix it up. If all you do is the advanced expert, you are skipping good trail.

Yeah i mean like people ahead of me have said no body knows what lap you are on and yeah who wouldnt like to show off, but is it worth it? I guess it just depends if you could take it or not! People shouldnt judge you on how you can ride. They should judge you on the person you are! LOL trevize, i love the movie SPEED! Nice post!

Yeah, Speed ... one of those bad but good Keanu classics. I think he was much better in Point Break, though: "aaI aaahm an eff bee aaaI aaaugent!"
This post was sort of intended to talk about the entire topic of that stupid male ego and testosterone and how it gets us into trouble. I feel I constantly battle with it, but have some good ways to defeat the whole "competitive jerk" syndrome I think most men are prone to.
Case in point: once I was on a ride where I decided to take it relatively easy. I saw a guy ahead on the trail and changed my entire tune (must ... pass ... to ... assert ... dominance!) I pass him, then he stays on my butt for a few miles. I start to lose him, then crash. By the time I'm up, he's caught up and we strike up a conversation.
I talk about how my crash was due to my damn ego and that it never fails: "I plan to take it easy, then someone like *you* comes along and spoils everything!" It turns the ride from some competitive grudge match between strangers into a light-hearted but still fast and furious ride between a couple of geeks havin' fun.
So, if you're ever riding with me and you hear me cracking jokes or using "cheesy" smack talk on you (Time's a wastin', dude!), it's my attempt to keep the green monster at bay. :)
