View Full Version : Why does the main page suck?

The main page for the forums now seems to *never* load. I have to get into the forums by clicking the little link to the newest posts since my last visit.

I think there's maybe too much going on there for the server to handle?

Anybody else getting this problem?

It seems like it has always been slow and it is getting slower. The only time I go there is to start a new thread or if I want to look at pics since they don't show up on the newest posts.

Sometimes I will hit stop and then click the forums button again and it will go through faster.

I had good luck in the past with just clicking the link multiple times, but lately it's gotten about 2X slower ...

What the heck kind a machine is this running on anyway? It's probably some Linux box that some anti-Microsoft guru wanted to build..........:)

Seriously, what is it and why does it seem to get so slow? More RAM usually makes a big difference. Maybe memory is being cached somewhere? John........???? Are you there????

cyclingforum.com doesn't seem to have the same problem, they are using the same version of vBulletin.

Maybe it's the Weather on top, or the Statistics at the bottom that's slowing things up.

It's funny you posted this, I was thinking about starting a thread on the same topic...

I too wonder if it has something to do with the temp. It seems that the times when it takes forever to come up, the weather info reads "0".

Even when it does come up, it always seems to be wrong.

Maybe the weather information is from the Afton Alps site?

Ever check weather at places like that or BuckHill.com in winter? Compare it with Weather.com, which might say:

50F, 40% cance of precip (freezing rain)

AftonAlps.com will say:

50F, 40% chance of precip (SNOW!)

Yes it is slow... we have a cheap heavily shared ISP and the forums require heavy mysql calls - if we can get more advertising and more members, we could afford a faster server.

Yes there are forums that are faster.. but there are many forums that are worse...

It is slower during heavy times... better at night.

Live with it - it will get better this fall or when we actually get someone to advertise or support us online.

I took out the weather and a bunch of other small things that were making sql calls from the main forum page.... that seems to have helped some. Let me know if things look better.

That seemed to help quite a bit, but like you said it is night now.

I do like this forum, it works a lot slicker than many I've seen.

Worked much better tonight, even for an evening. I guess we shall see in the middle of the day (when everyone is supposed to be WORKING:) ) when it is usually busiest.

A little faster? It's practically instantaneous!

Great job, John!

I wonder if it's because of the threads that trail off into the abyss? Not that it's a bad thing. Just wondering?

Dennis.

that's because you are on dialup:)

Acutally, it is much faster, John. Not sure if you did anything other than getting rid of the weather, but it worked.

If people want weather they can go to:

www.crh.noaa.gov/mpx

have fun

Yea, there was (and still is) a lot of added stuff to the forums that most don't have. "hacks" they call it... the weather was one. There is some code in the page to generate a birthday greeting that I took out, as well as some statistics stuff. Each call to the sql server took time... it worked back when we had fewer people online. Our ISP used to be faster too - I think we're on one of their slowest servers... from time to time I have to log in and check the CPU usage because someone elses system has a runawa process eating up all the power. They don't monitor their servers really well.

When we go to the next version of VB I'm going to yank out a lot of the custom code and leave it pretty standard. I'll put back things like the trail reviews, but it makes it almost impossible to upgrade or troubleshoot with all the stuff thats been added now.

Most of what I added will be included standard in the newer version anyway...

Glad things are running a bit better today... sorry bout' that!

VB?....I guess that's not anti-Microsoft now is it?

I just started a Java class. Man, talk about battles within the industry. I need both a MS VM and a Java VM on my box to run all applets. Microsoft and Sun should get their crap sorted out soon, so we can all live a happier life!

VBulletin by Jellsoft... both anti Microsoft and Anti-IBM....

Although if Microsoft made forum software, thats what we would use. If MS made cars, I'd buy one... if MS ran for govt' (or took it over) I'd vote for it...

Shad, stop running windoze then you don't need to worry about VB.

VB sounds way too much like VD, I don't want to have anything to do with it...

I don't think that one is ever getting sorted out, I think Sun and Microsoft have pretty much divorced. Which is why we have C#. I'll stick to Sun Java, thanks.

Oops, somebody pushed my geek button, back to mountain biking...

Still enlightened.. but perhaps brainwashed. ;)

I knew my statement would bring out some comments.. hehe.. I hope I haven't dissapointed you guys too much. MS basically keeps me in my job right now.

If it helps, I know linux/unix real well too... all my web servers run on unix (by choice).
