So my best man was in town the other day and he brought his roadie up for a spin. We met up with another guy that was in my wedding party and took off. We were riding in St Paul. It was as good a morning as you could get. Early, about 6 am or so. It was nice and cool, and the streets were deserted as it was Sunday. We started in Lillydale and followed the river road to the Highbridge. Went down the bridge and up to the Grand Ave. area.

We were happily spining along in the bike lane, talking and laughing. I was next to the kerb, Dale was half a length behind me, and Luther half a length behind Dale. So we were nice and tight.

I noticed a squirrel start running for the road about 20m up. No prob, I figger, it'll see us and turn around.

but NOOOO, it didn't turn around! In slow motion, I watched this little creature run under my bike, between my wheels. I didn't hit it, but it ran straight into Dales front wheel, getting caught in the spokes. It was flipped up, and in a total 'Matrix' moment flipped in the air 360° to land on its feet. I saw the belly of a squirrel as I thought I never would. Once it landed, it realized that it wasn't in a good place and truned to hightail it out of there, only to run into MY rear wheel and have the same thing happen there. Nothing but rotating, flying squirrel. Once again, it landed feet first, and took off running. Straight into Luther's front wheel! Up goes the squirrel yet again, by this time, it has to be dizzy, and wondering what the f*ck happened to his pleasent, nut finding Sunday morning. Miraculously, it again landed on its feet and this time just stayed put.

Last I saw, it was staggering off back to teh side of the road it came from, probably thinking twice about crossing the road again! This cetainly made for good coffee conversation at Caribou, and good story material for here.

That's one of those stories that's so cool it has to be true or so far out there, there isn't a shred of accuracy to it.

that squirrel probably saw that Geico commercial where the 2 squirrels team up and scare motorists off the road. after seeing that he thought it would be fun to show off in front of his squirrel buddies.....
and that is what happens when tv's negative and irresponsible role models influence impressionable squirrels :)

Awesome story!! Maybe next time a squirrel flies up by your face from your wheel you'll grab it mid-air and toss it back to the sidewalk and keep it from getting squirrel guts on your spokes.

Was there any fur that you had to pick out the spokes?! Or maybe a toe or part of an ear? Eeeewwww....
