Just wondering how many of you out there are planning on participating in the 24 hrs at Afton coming up on the 22nd/23rd?
Anyone riding it solo? Team? Mixed Team? Old people team?

It looks like I will be doing the 4 man team thing again this year. Last year was my first time and I had a blast, very much looking forward to it.

yep, will be doing it as part of a four-man team again this year (second time). Managed to get a team together entirely from work this year.
Cheers

We'll be riding on a 4 man team. Looking forward to doing it. I worked the last 2 years at it with MORC. Nows the time to do it!!

I checked out Afton on Sunday. Sandy, very sandy.

The last couple weeks most of the trails I'v ridden are having lots of sand. Lack of rain.

I never thought I'd say this, but we do need rain! I'm starting to think the dry is worse on the trails than wet (in some ways).

Just so that it does not rain while the race is going on... That might suck in a very huge way.!

oh man! You had to go saying rain. Now it will rain for sure. Better bring a couple sixers of Moose Drool to toss back when it starts.

I just went to weather.com and they are talking about scattered t-storms on the 22nd.

Just got home from riding Afton (Friday) the trails were much better than they were earlier in the week. A lil' water would help a lot but if it stays how it is it'll be fine. But man was it HOT today, I hope it cools more than if it rains!!!!

We did some "test laps" yesterday (sunday) on what we believe to be the course and things are in reasonable shape. Although I certainly echo the heat concerns!
There are still a few areas with significant amounts of sand and continuous abuse from riders over 24 hrs. will make for some interesting laps. But there isn't anything that I would consider dangerous at this time.
Let's hope for a safe and fun event for all!

Sounds like we might be really lucky with weather!
Anyone else getting nervous... I think that it is a little too late to worry about anything now?

What's to worry about? Just remember that if you get tired of riding you can just sit around and drink beer all day (and night).:D

I can't wait! I have a borrowed bike to ride since mine got ripped off. And I must say sweetly tuned from the guy at Kenwood Cycle!! Thanks man It's running smooth!! That is a great shop with guys that know what they are doing.
If anyone wants to know who my jackarse is I'll have my red 2002 chevy silverado extend a cab with a heavy dudy ladder rack on it.
(for all you I hate gas guzzeler trucks and SUV's it was completely necessary for my business since In needed to haul trailers with 2,000+ lbs. of metal) And I'm on a red and white ummmm bike, with tires and some shifter things.
Would be interesting to meet some of you and say what's up or have it out. There will be some mountain climbers cheering me on so if anyone is interested in climbing (if you can do afton I can tell you is is tougher than climbing the higest in the lower 48) stop on by and chat.
See you there!!
Good times, good times!

I'm kinda bummed - I was hoping the bike patrol was going to be working the 24 hours so I could ride the trail... I guess that is not the case. :embarass:
Guess I'll just have to watch everyone else have all the fun.
Nite riding at Afton... man I was looking forward to that!!

John,
We are putting on the race. You can go out and do a night lap any time you want, there is nothing keepiing you off the trail. Just do a night time trail marker and tape check.
I will probably do something similar on the last hour of the race with the helmet cam on probably pointed backwards so that I get shots of all the suffering faces.

Yes.. yes.. a tape check. VERY important business this tape check.. I believe this may require a lap or two at the very least.
Thanks James, you are my hero today... ;)

Same here, I would love to meet some of you guys here on the board. Our group will have a black Xterra, red VW Golf, maybe Grizzly's MINI, blue easy up tent. And if your not riding for some reason stop and have a BEER, mmmmmm.

We'll be out there as well. Silver Chevy Truck, a black (or blue?) Suburu and a Blue top EZ-UP canopy with Green Side walls (atleast one of the side walls will be up!) Also look for a red Yeti with a 6'4" fat guy! (That's me!) The others will be riding a Blue Ellsworth Truth (Shane) a Specialized ??? (Allen).
We plan on being there all afternoon before the race... So swing by any time, it would be great to put more faces with names from this site.
Look forward to meeting everyone and let's hope for some great weather and a safe race for all!

We'll be there, too! Stop by and say "Hi" anytime (unless I'm sleeping...yeah, right!).
We'll have Green Dodge Durango, a red diesel Ford (I think) and probably a black Chevy S-10. There'll be a white EZ-Up in the middle of all this.
See you all there!

And another Golf - black with an orange bike a'top. See y'all out there. Can't take the MINI away from my wife while I'm out riding and she's running all over town . . .

What a great time the 24 hours was! I only rode the trail a couple of times while on patrol, but it was tough. I have to hand it to all of you who were on a team and especially those of you riding solo... I saw some real heart out there on the hill (and saw a few lungs as well hehe)
IMHO Afton is tougher than Welch even though I believe Welch is a much bigger area. Afton took you up, then down, then up.. down, up etc. Just when you thought you were headed back down to finish a lap, up you went...
3 bananas to everyone that rode the 24 hours this weekend... and the same goes out to Scott Thayer and all the volunteers this weekend.

BTW: next year we should form a MORC team (or two..)

Did anyone get the actual distance of the course? I heard everything from 7 to 12 miles while out riding. It was an extremely challenging course and as a result of riding solo, I experienced a new level of pain.
Thank you and    to all that helped out.
