Ok...I'm curious...since Chris and I had a 30 sec conversation in person without knowing we knew each other (at least online)
Who's going to be riding Leb tonight?
I'm planning on being there around 6pm (ish) - 7pm (ish)
I'll be the guy with the really cool Escape with a Yakima Roof Rack (and not because it's cool looking either)

ROTFLMAO!!!! A cool Escape! Oh man ... that's priceless ...
Hmm ... are you sure about tonight? Looks like rain to me.

How 'bout a group ride next week? Next Monday or Tuesday? Hell, all of next week is open for me ... the wedding will be done!
If anybody ever wonders if I'm there at the time, just look for the black-and-tan Impreza Outback with the same words as my sinature here in the back window ;) :

I had planned to be there with a couple of friends doing some video work.
But with the light quality and the chance of rain, I might put it off.
We are planning a ride at 11:00am ish at the Farm on Saturday.

Wow...I knew there was a chance for rain but according to intellicast.com it's raining at my home right now (I'm only about 5 miles north)...looks like Leb is getting some right now too...oh well
How's Tuesday for a group ride?

You mean next tuesday? Would work for me.
I'm still keeping tonight in mind, though. I'll watch that weather closely this afternoon. The rain seems spotty, so we might get lucky. Plus, a friend of mine wants to go riding there tonight.

You know, with no trail work going on in August, maybe we'll get a nice tribe of riders out there comprised of the usual Tuesday night trail workers?

Weather ...
Here's a good site for animated radar:
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/radar/loop/DS.p19r0/si.kmpx.shtml
For short term forecasts (<6hr), looking at radar is usually just as good or better than any forecast you'll find on the web.

Well, I'm of the opinion that the whole area has been very lightly sprinkled with raindrops and it's passing now so by the time we get to the trail at 6 it'll be very rideable =)
Takin' my friend Andy down there and I think Shad is joining us tonight, too.
See ya there!

Major props to Socrates for this idea!
James was there with the vid camera tonight and we got some sweet stuff!
The group ride was awesome, too! And, we're doing it again NEXT Tuesday!
All I gotta say is we got some good riders on this board. Everyone excels at one thing or another, or one part of the trail or another. I really liked seeing the different lines people took over various bits. It's also interesting to ride right behind James and John because all they talk about is how this section could be improved or that section could be made better. Always thinkin'! ;)

The group ride was awesome! Like Chris said, we definitely have some strong riders on this board!! It is great to ride behind different people and check out new lines... as much as I ride Lebanon, I still learned a thing or two tonight that will make me even faster.
We're gonna try it again next week... 6pm in the parking lot at Lebanon. August has always been put aside for group rides, and I'm glad it finally is happening. Its time to celebrate all the work everyone has put in... ride the trails instead of working on them.. talk about what we like and what we could make better etc.
It doesn't matter how strong you are, please come out next week and ride with the group! Especially those of you who have been a part of the trail crew over the years... but also open to anyone.
Mark it down now - 6pm next Tuesday. Maybe I'll bring the digital camera and get some shots for the photo gallery to go along with the video footage we got this week.
To everyone who rode tonight - thanks for a great ride! Three bananas to you all... (especially the Dakota County guy, who rode with us and kept up while wearing full outfit, older bike, packing heat, AND wearing a vest!)

I'll try and remember to bring my camera too. By the way - how do you protect yours while riding? The camera that is.
I have always just resorted to a disposable, but I would much rather bring my digital. Especially since I still have the pics from the farm group ride fermenting within the unfinished disposable roll. :o

just wait till you see my camera! Burly is one word I can think of for it. I usually carry it in my MountianSmith pack. I've crashed with it before and it does fine. Though it IS designed for construction sites and such. I've dropped it from 3' to hard ground beofre with no issues.

Something has come up. It looks like I might not be making it. If I dont make it, have a good ride and I'll be thinkin' of y'all.
ps. I carry our point and shoot 35mm in the hydration pack and have never had a problem. It's not the easiest to get at all the time but that's why riding in a group is great. "Hey, could you grab my camera. . . "

My legs got the beating, not my head. I did wear a helmet though. The only advantage for me so far is the venting. My head stays a lot cooler and I still have a visor. Gotta have a visor on your helmet if you want to be cool......:)
Speaking of visors I noticed on my last loop through the XX loop last evening a visor sitting along side the trail. I was to tired to stop and pick it up though.
Not to get off topic but last week during the trail trim on the MN River bottoms I found a shock boot. It was in perfect condition, no cracks etc. My guess is that to lose this someones fork must to have come apart. :crazy2: Hope whoever this happened to wasn't going too fast!?!

Indeed. I've got some pictures that I'll upload tonight probably. But don't get your hopes up, I didn't take too many, and those I did take have a nice thumb blur on 'em. Riding with a digital camera was no problem, I am just too lazy to stop and dig it out of the pack very often. And after all it was a group RIDE.
No pics of Shad and others doing big tricks off the table top - I'd have to be fast enough to keep up with them for that.

08-14-2003, 01:47 PM
Sorry Chris, there is no 'correct' line in this case. They all get you around and through the corner. My favorite line is right over the top of everything as you can see from my picture. It does me well.
BrightYellow
08-14-2003, 02:04 PM
I agree with you martini.... plus, who would try to make the rock gardens EASIER? Why bother having a rock garden if you are going to try and find the EASIEST way through it?
manual63
08-14-2003, 02:23 PM
I can take the right side (Chris' incorrect way), but it requires trials skills that, when riding a long distance, are kind of tiring. I prefer the left side as it seems faster and takes less effort. But if you can do it from the inside of the turn, that means you have some good skill goin' on and I would not consider it incorrect.

Sorry Pat. Corrected now.
It is good to see that the rock gardens cause a bit of a stir. Hell, the only reason I stopped there to take a few shots is that I dabbed right from the start.
I have a lot better luck going through the inside track - if I take it to the outside, I usually end up shoulder checking the tree on the outside corner. I usually have to stop going through the inside and do a little hop to straighten out, which definitely breaks up my flow. I think Marty has the only sure method - bludgeon right through.
I hate to admit it, but this little corner of the X loop, is for my money the trickiest part of the entire park.

Apparently, you all are slow learners. Let me refresh:
Left-hand line: CORRECT
Right-hand line: INCORRECT
Thank you for your time.

08-14-2003, 09:03 PM
I'm with Chris on the left side. Not that anywhere else isn't "correct" if you like to ride it and it works for ya... but after riding as many laps as I have I find the left side gets me around faster and cleaner more consistantly.

Here is an example of THE line. See how from this view it almost looks like there is no other way. Trouble is from the other direction you have to hit the larger of the first section of rocks to pull it off.

I would agree we're about the same size, but what about the hair comment!! I shave my face like twice a month. I am the exact opposite of Grizzly Adams. ;) (except for the bear)
The ride was awesome! Last nite I was on the XX 3x more than I had been all this year. The first time over the table top was pretty "hair raising" as I gave the person behind me a good look at my bottom bracket. The turkeys were cool to see.
The pace was wonderful. I had never ridden the XX that fast before. What a treat. Shad, thanks for the sparks in the rock garden and showing me some really cool lines. Ed - thanks for showing me that "loose rock".

Good riding Pat. I think that is the hardest a lot of us have ridden the trail. It was cool seeing how everyone rode different sections.

Yeah...I know I'm the opposite of most people, I like to take the beginner/intermediate trails really fast (so I was pushing you guys) then take the X and XX somewhat slower

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with how my technical skills (and confidence) are improving this year, it just gets ugly for me any time the trail heads up, I've made improvement there as well, but I just have a longer way to go in that area.

That is probably why a small group of 2 or 3 riders just takes off from the rest. Man, I like the training, but I feel like I am gonna die when I am done. What's really funny is how we all think we are soooo fast, but Monday I was leading and some guy came up behind me wanting to pass. Was it Chris, Andy, or Dave?..........Nope, it was some dude who smoked us all!

Maybe next time I'll Grrrrrr and rub your tire - then you'll know it's me instead of Martini.
Actually, I knew you were Adam last night, but I wrote the post when I woke up this morning and I was in a hurry and still tired. I blame the wife because she needed me to help her study until about 1 am and we got up at 7 am.

Yeah and I think that guy rides to the park too!!!
Hey thanks for using a picture of me. However the real line went like below.
(Rode w/ a friend at Leb yesterday and he gave me another approach to this section. He rode up and onto the rocks and then just bunny-hopped his way around the corner. He's one of those BMX dudes who can do those fun tricks)

How does Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. sound?
And, Dave, you're not invited until you learn a lesson about the difference between ending words with just "s" (plural) and ending words with " 's " (possessive, except for the word "its").

Hey what do you want...it was a really long week...and after 4 flights on Saturday I'm lucky I knew the way home or where I had parked my car the week before (actually I only knew which level it was on but thankfully the deck was pretty empty)
btw: 10 works for me

You are correct - no trail work tonight. I'm actually stuck at work anyway, may have to fly out to Garland TX to restore some email... have a good last Tuesday group ride and we'll see you all out for trail work next week... right? Right? ;)

It was a great group ride last night. I was there ... and ... um ...
Well, so, I had a good ride last night. Amazing how you can do the same distance by yourself and be done by 7:15 as opposed to 8:30 with a group ride (lots of stopping and regrouping).

I am posting this here from the riding tips section. I don't plan to do another beginner ride, but instead I plan to show and be shown some more advanced techniques like we have been discussing in the Riding Tips sections. Mainly drops and log rolls like in the XX-Loop and some cornering stuff. It will be fun to see how people do different things and how a HT and FS work over certain things.
Lets plan Sunday after the Game.....so that will be around 4:00 or 4:30. I don't want to be any later than that because it gets dark too quickly now. If the games a dud or the Vikes play like usual, I will be out there earlier.

I was going to join you guys after the game... but its like 92 degrees out and I'm tired of the hot weather. I'm going to wait until it gets dark and cooler and go tonight instead.
I hate when it gets 90 in September. It should be in the 70s... what will happen is that it will be 90 up to late October, then it will be like 40... right from short sleeves to multiple layers.
All the while people will talk about how it is 10-20 degrees warmer than normal (even though it has been 10-20 degrees warmer than normal the last 10 years or so...)

It was hot. We did 1 lap with a 2 lap XX-Loop run and I was so beat. I wanted to do another full lap, but was just too drained. I can usually do 3 consecutive laps with the XX-Loop and have no problem......even on my P.2.
We had fun though. I got some trials pointers from some guys in the parking lot and I gave Phillip some pointers over the table. We also compared doing the drop. He had and FS and liked landing both wheels at the same time and I had a HT and like to land rear wheel first. I think that's what we came up with. I also noticed that the XX-Loop log drop has a slight downhill landing and isn't a totally flat landing. That makes a big difference. I think if it was totally flat, people would want to land rear wheel first, even with FS.
We had fun and Phillip is a very good rider. He is excited to try the techniques discussed in the Riding tips section and claims he has improved a lot since practicing them.
I think next year we should plan more group rides and learning rides. It helps out everyone and the less experienced riders seem to really like them.

You should have been there at 8am...it was in the 70's then :D (and empty too)

I was deceptively hot yesterday, I'm glad I didn't go to the trail. I rode my bike over to a friends house after the game yesterday and I was drained. Didn't seem that bad when I left, but maybe it was because the dewpoint was only in the 40's it felt more comfortable.
Later this week it should get much cooler and we don't need to worry about getting rained out despite the thunderbolts in the forecast...
So how fast do you guys go cranking through the X and XX stuff? I've never been though it and am quite apprehensive about it. Right now I wouldn't want to slow anyone down on the rest of the trail, but I'm thinking ahead...

I wanted to show up for this, but I wasn't in the mood to make everyone wait while I haul my fat a** up the hills.
So instead I rode around my neighborhood looking for trouble, SLP is really boring though, so I just rode down every staircase I could find.
I'm really getting excited about the tech side though and I would like to see some of the riding tips demonstrated, it is really difficult for me to translate the descriptions to actually riding.
My best technique is momentum, momentum, momentum and if the trail is turning down at all I have plenty of that :).

The intention of these rides is to learn and not to haul @ss. So the next time we go, feel free to join no matter how slow you are. It's a chance to learn to be smoother and faster.
I think I have helped riders progress and that is way cool. I have progressed more this summer than ever before. By teaching, getting pointers, and new ideas on how to do things, my riding have improved greatly. Not only on how to ride, but bike setup also.
Don't be intimidated, come out and learn or teach......it's fun and riders seem to really enjoy the experience.
We will have to see how this upcoming weekend will be. Maybe it will be cooler and I will have time to show up again.

Well, I can say that the little bit of advice on climbing I got from you before I crapped out last time seems to be a help. Since then I have stuck to riding the warm up loop, many times, and more and more aggressively. Been trying to take it easier for awhile because since that incident I had an *almost* migraine level headache in the back of my head that lasted until the following thursdsay night. On the climbs there I have been trying to keep the gearing up (even shifting to a faster gear sometimes) and use the leg muscles more to try to build them up. I think it is beginning to help some. It's definately going to take a while to get to a "competent" strength + endurance to handle bigger hills like the entrace at leb. but you've got to start somewhere.

One thing that has helped me a lot (my first season as well) is to never walk a hill, even if I have to spin at a ridiculous rate and move up the hill at about 2 miles per hour. Walking a hill doesn't build the muscles you need to develop as well as riding it does. This also really helps with building your lungs...
So any time I hit a hill that makes me want to walk, I will spin up the hill, even taking a break half way up if I have to, but not walking an inch..
And every 2nd or 3rd time up a certain hill, I can use a bigger cog to increase my time up!

Who's going to be riding Leb tonight?
I'm planning on being there around 6pm (ish) - 7pm (ish)
I'll be the guy with the really cool Escape with a Yakima Roof Rack (and not because it's cool looking either)
Is it time we brought back group rides at Leb? Possibly on weekends now that the days are gettings shorter? I'm open for either/both Saturday/Sunday (Mornings are best for me but anytime will work)

Anyone interested in joining up at Lebanon for an early afternoon ride tomorrow (friday oct, 3rd)? Say 1:30?
I'm going to bring my camera and get shots of people going over the toys in the XX loop (jump, teeter, bridges, etc...). My camera can also take vids but If someone has a real digital video camera that would be cool (if it's not too bulky to fit in a camel back).... Any pics I get I'll either post or email them to the person in the pick...
I'm going to be there regardless so I hope to see anyone interested there.

Sound good, I plan on being there for a while (til 4 or 5) so just look for me in the lot or on the trail if you're not there at 1:30. I'll either have my green dodge intrepid (with the thule roof rack) or my parents grey taurus wagon :embarass:
Hope to see you there. :)
