I saw a a post referring to those who place their bar ends at 90 degrees. I hate to admit it, but this bugs me, too. Was wondering, does this bug everyone, or just a few? What else bothers people?

Yep, that bugs me too.
Another thing that bugs me: I saw a guy buy $1500 full suspension bike and then put bmx pedals on it and ride around on the roads.

It doesn't bother me. Some people just don't know any better, or they like them the way they are.
I've been thinking about getting a set of bar ends for my MB, but don't have any idea what the differences are and how easy they are to install. Anyone have any advice?

Go to your LBS and find bar ends that feel good in your hands. (Keep the jokes to a minimum). They are easy to install but the bike shop should put them on for free if you buy them there. I really like having bar ends helps when bouncing off of trees and gives you a different place to put your hands when climbing or riding on the street.

I think bar ends rock! I always rest my hands against them and on the long climbs it's great to have another position. My old bar ends wrapped slightly around my hand and saved my hands from hitting trees dozens of times.
Be careful if you have carbon bars though, not all bar ends work with carbon bars because of the way the clasp closes. Carbon doesn't bend!

Oh, I love bar ends. It just drives me crazy when people point them straight up. If you want a higer hand position, get a different stem.

I dislike bar ends. I like a shorter handlebar with no ends on them - helps in negotiating tight trees and corners etc.
I used to use them when I rode trails that were paved etc. At Leb they would just be in my way.

Brian,
i am not a big bar end fan, but i just bought a pair of Cane Creek Ergo ends for my girlfriend. she said they will take some getting used to, but she really likes them. they don't place your hands out in front of the bar as much as traditional bar ends do, but they sure feel like they would definitely help when cranking up a hill.
i bought them at Penn and they charged me 5 dollars to install them.. should have installed them myself :(
good luck

Pointing bar ends up at 90 degrees is not only unsightly, it is unsafe. if that bar whips around, it's most likely going go hit you somewhere in the torso area, and i imagine it's not going to feel good.
