The black hills has some killer mountain biking, im all with Marty on that one. He wasnt kidding when he said it was deserted, the only thing that sucks is that the lack of riders entails trails that arent very well ridden, and there are also lots of rocks, but if you can handle a few extra bumps its all good! I was out there last weekend riding and did about 12 miles of the centennial trail from brush creek to samelius. Slow climbs but great downhills, and right out of brush creek there are some stunning bluffs from which you can see harney peak, it was awesome. I also recommend checking out Storm Mountain, there is some great single track full of switch backs and tight twisting rocky downhills. It was fast, rocky, and a little technical, with short climbs here and there, it really rocked for a few hours of biking. Storm mountain is right off highway 16 about 6 miles outside of Rapid City. M hill has some good downhilling too, its right in Rapid, the giant hill with SMD on it for south dakota school of the mines, thats M hill, it shouldnt be hard to find that one. Make a good weekend of it though, the 600 mile drive from the cities is pretty sick . The picture is from the bluffs on the centennial trail near brush creek. I totally recommend riding the black hills, it rocks.

I rode two trails in the Spearfish area this weekend. The Tinton Road Trail and the Old Baldy Trail. These were both quite primitive as well. Very different than riding around the Twin Cities. I was very glad to have full suspension because of all the rocks. Definitely a rollercoaster ride on both with the Old Baldy being the better trail in my book.

Old Baldy seemed to be a bit more ridden and I actually met a pair of bikers from Phoenix on the trail. That was surprising as the trail has a very remote location.

we spent a week out in the Black Hills earlier this year. we stayed at Lake Sylvan for a few days. the trails there were pretty soft because they have not been ridden much. they were still fun, though. then we spent the next couple days in Spearfish. we rode old baldy, man is it a ways out on that gravel road :)
cow poo adds a whole new dimension to mountain biking.. :D
the "summit" of old baldy mountain was pretty cool.

we also rode another trail on the same gravel road as old baldy, not sure of the name, but it was kind of fun. the last downhill leading to the car was crazy rocky and bumpy. fun fun.
