Once again this year, MORC is helping out with the 24 Hours of Afton, and we need your help!

The race starts Friday, August 22 and finishes Saturday the 23rd.

Volunteers are needed to help throughout the entire process to help it go smoothly. One area in particular that we need help with is in scoring. So, if you are able to donate some time to a good cause (proceeds from the race go to MORC), let me know, and I'll be in touch to finalize the details.

Thanks!

I'll be there, as long as this year I am not the one who has to wake up Steve G at 3:30 am and tell him it's his turn to count laps.

I'll most likely be there the entire time, and hope others will do the same.

I haven't decided yet where to put my name in, but will likely fill in many different places.

It also depends on whether we're going to patrol the event.

At any rate, I'll try sign up for something specific after a while, but you can count on me being there to fill in where needed.

How old do you have to be? Is 18 old enough? I'd like to help for both days but I have to check with my parents.

Burke

18 is plenty old! Come on out and help. Do you have any preference of time slots? or should I just put you down for the graveyard shifts?

I'll be there by 5 on Friday (have to see the start!) and I'll stay for the whole thing. Not sure which shifts I want to take yet. Will get back to you on that. I'm pretty flexible.

Can anybody give me suggestions on how much work to take on without it becoming a drag. I want to have fun.

Maybe I'll just fill in where needed.

Let me just say that I hope lots of you will come out to the 24 hours. I'll be there probably the entire time - it would be fun to see more of you out there... would be fun to get to know more of you over some racing and a pizza (or whatever)...

Hope to see you there! (and if you are there, feel free to help out - just let Scott know and he'll put you to work..)

ostertoaster85
08-13-2003, 10:36 AM
OK, I'm sure that I can get off from work and be there so put me down for 3-7 am.

I plan on being around for all day saturday, so I could probably take a time in there too if needed.

I there anything we need to know besides just show up and have fun?

martini

I'll be there, but I'm helpping with a coupla solo riders with support for them. I might be able to do some other kinda volunteer work though, but I wouldn't count on it...

It's the day of reckoning!

Here's the schedule:
2-5pm Friday, Don Youngdahl
5-7pm Friday, JJ Robb and Kristin Lohn
7-9pm Friday, Kurt Lange
7-11pm Friday, Torey Strand
9pm-1am Fri-Sat, Jeff Gude
10pm-2isham Fri-Sat, John Benik
3am-7am Sat, David Osterhouse
5am-7am Sat, Torey Strand
5am-9am Sat, James Ford
7am-9am Sat, Kurt Lange

There are others that are volunteering, However, I contacted them directly, so if you see time gaps, don't panic.

If you've never been to Afton Alps, check their website for directions: www.aftonalps.com

If you're staying overnight, bringing bedding (sleeping bag etc...) might not be a bad idea.

Also, a folding chair or something to sit on could come in handy.

Everyone listed here is signed up to help with scoring, so show up a little early and find out where the scoring area is. Once you arrive, I'll be coordinating the volunteer effort so try and track me down. I shouldn't be too far from the chalet or the scorers.

Another thing to bring would be bug spray.

Anyway, if you have any questions between now and then, my cell number is 952 270-6329. I've heard the coverage at Afton isn't the greatest, so it's possible it might not get through, but I'll have my phone with me all the time.

Thanks again for volunteering, and see you there!

Good People,

my bro and i ride afton twice a week, and we were just there yesterday. here are a few thoughts for what they're worth.

on the bridge loop, the last steep descent (before the curvy slow descent back down to the main trail) has an unavoidable tight rut right down the middle. i can't imagine anyone riding this at night. if you do, you rule. if you wipe out, your pals will enjoy picking up an extra lap while you ice down your ego.

after deer path, there's the 100 yard wooded gulley that takes you very close to the start/finish line. if you thought it was a little shifty at the afton race this year, it's gotten quite a bit worse. stitch in time saves nine in your head.

finally, the very opening turn (if the race still starts where it used to) is always sandy with puddles, but there is a tight route that will get you around the corner and up the first little rise without too much sand in your rig.

peace
