Just a heads up everyone. There's a raccoon camped by the 2nd bridge in the new section. It looked like it was convulsing. I'm no expert, but it looked like rabies possibly.

The raccoon remained on the trail and looked to be on it's last leg, but suddenly started pacing the trail and approaching people in a some what disorientated fashion. The whole episode lasted at least 10 minutes.

Some guy there called the cops just to inform someone. I don't think they did anything though. The met him in the parking lot, but took off moments later.

There was definitely something wrong with that animal and it didn't look like an trying to protect anything...

Finally got to ride the new additions today with my bro-in-law in town from Milwokay. He was very impressed with the quality as was I.

Great stuff Leb Trail Crew!!!! Thanks for all your hard work. It is very much appreciated.

I'm on the north side of Eagan, (about 6 miles north of leb) and don't think we got that much. Maybe 1/4 inch or so.

The trail was very dry last night, so a few sprinkles will be good.

This is a guess, but I'm thinking it will be okay to ride this evening. Of course, if it looks wet, please try to find a way to bail, and spread the word to anyone who will listen.

Rain came down really hard just after I got back from my ride. Four guys started their lap right ahead of me on my half lap over to Galaxy so I'm pretty sure they were caught in it.
The trail was in good condition after the morning rain and the afternoon storm that just grazed Leb but the last one had to have scored a direct hit. I would guess it needs some drying time now.

Looks like about .22" fell

My gage showed just under a half inch. The storms the last few days have been the type that pour down buckets here but almost nothing 300 yards away.
Since we're on opposite sides of the park, I'd say the truth lies somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2".

There are a number of corners holding a significant amount of fine loose dirt that may cause you trouble.

The trail is in fantastic shape. It's on the dry side of tacky but rides exceptionally well. I didn't notice any unexpectedly loose corners.

On a side note (I'm posting this because my wife doesn't ride and I want to share)...
After a feeling and riding very poorly at Murphy yesterday and feeling lousy for most of today, I had one of the best rides of my life.

It was the smoothest and most flowing ride I have ever had. I finished Leb in 45:37 with out pushing too hard. It was just a fantastic ride. I don't know how things came together so well but they sure did.

I wish you all the same experience.

Steve and John, I'm sorry the timing didn't work out. I would have loved to share this with someone.

New trail is still pretty bumpy and getting dry again. Difficult to get this new trail in proper shape without rain. We'll fix any areas that need it once we get the right amount of moisture...

The one berm exit does need to be addressed asap. I think its the trail, not the berm. Looks like a pretty good trail of riders going off the edge. We'll get to this in the next few weeks or when trailwork starts in Sept.

There are a few turns out there that kinda bust the nice flow.. we will address this too as necessary.

Trail is fun, but really needs more rain to avoid the dry areas busting apart.

Rest of the trail is like riding on pavement.

Kinda feels like it too. Not sure how, but some braking bumps got the better of me at a higher speed and I went down. I'll be fine though, my face broke the fall.:hit:

Otherwise, trail was a blast today. Fast, fast, fast.:)

Rode the new section at Leb for the second time the other day...
Being that I thought I knew what was in store, I pushed my speed a little too much- ended up going over a bermed section and into a large tree. Ouch.

Apart from a dented helmet (and ego), no real damage was done- a few cuts and bruises here and there but nothing too bad. It did get me thinking though, about helmets and how important they are. This is the second time a lid has saved me from serious injury- the first time was on a motorcycle when a car pulled out infront of me from a side road. I still remember the sound the impact made...
Anyway I know I'm probably preaching to the converted, but i make a point of telling people I know who ride without helmets, either on or off road, how they can save a trip to the ER or worse by wearing one.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoying the new section- the trail designers/ builders have done an incredible job . One of these days my work schedule will allow me to come out and help. Failing that I'll get you some beers.

Thurs night Aug 21

Good condition, although dry and dusty.

As Chris mentioned, watch out coming off hot out of the new berms. The trail is wearing away on a couple exits, but too dry for us to do much about it. Stay to the inside of the berm exits and you'll be fine.

Still kind of new to posting and trail riding in general, so if this is useless, ignore it... Anyhow, I've actually found that, if I hang to the left/outside coming out of the berm, then pull in to the right a little later than expected, I've avoided any issues of trailing off to the left at that semi-uphill turn.

Thursday, 4:45 ---> Still to soft to ride.

I stopped by Leb on my way home, to see (on foot) if there was any chance of riding tonight. Nope. Even the entry and exit points are still soft, which to me, eliminates any hope of a ride.

Unfortunately, some others do not agree and there were people riding. Among them was a group of six that, judging by their attire (street cloths and no helmets), will not be soft on the trail.

I was out to Leb on Sunday ( first ride there since winter ). Trail was in vrey good condition but then I notices new cuttings on the trail, more and more as I rode and all the while I am thinking not to pedal so I dont loose a rear derailuer. They were right in the middle of the trail, not the side.

So my question is - (And I can speculate about the the answer(s) )
Why in the middle of the trail with brush/ branch clippings?
This took away from the ride experience.

When I do trail work these things do not stay on the trail for even a short time. Just wondering the reasoning

By the way the new exit section was more than I had heard about and will be a gas as it gets buffed in. ( I still miss the old one too )

Its a lot of work to trim the trail and then "sweep" it completely clean after. These trimmings usually only last a short while, and the bulk are removed as to not cause a danger to riders.

It could be that some still fall onto the trail after trimming has been completed, thats just nature moving things around.

Riders are welcome to move potentially dangerous trimmings off the trail if they find them. We always appreciate when people help with things like face slappers etc.

Thanks for your understanding and appreciation of the volunteers efforts.

Yup, thats a bad one. As soon as we get decent soaking rain out there we will fix it up. We didn't anticipate the need for a wider corner in that spot. (you have to exit the berm a bit earlier to avoid the outside)

Thanks for the comments from both sides.

The clippings are there because we haven't gotten around to removing them yet. The trimmer is a fairly dangerous piece of equipment, and it takes a long time to trim the trail. So, we don't want to distract the operator with the chore of removing the clippings.

About leaving them there, clippings (and leaves) are organic matter. We go out of our way to try and keep the tread as mineral, usually with a power leaf blower in the fall. If we let organic matter (such as leaves) work its way into the tread, then then soil becomes unstable and we end up with places that hold water and eventually turn into ruts. This topic gets debated every year. If we want to debate it again, let's resurrect an old thread and work from there.

Meanwhile, the trail is in great condition as of last night.

Walked out onto the trail from the Galaxie trailhead at 0730 this morning. No puddles in the usual hollow spots. Trail is damp with very thin-to-no mush layer on top where the dust usually sits, a little shiny in appearance on the hard-pack. Some fresh tracks from someone riding already today - should be good to go and improving throughout the day as long as we don't get more rain.

The trail is still very wet and clearly not okay to ride.

My plan was to give Murphy a try, since it usually dries faster than Leb. However, my curiosity got the better of me and I went to check out Lebanon.

Between the entrance and the turn after the first crossing, there were 5-8 unavoidable puddles with tracks through them. I'm sure it only gets worse from there.

Check out the pictures Shad posted of Theo, if you want to know how Leb looks.

Trail is tacky with a few small wet spots in trouble areas. There is a small tree down on the first up-hill to the congregation area (the one that was opened last year), just before the log step and sharp right. It really kills your momentum.

Heads up for trailwork in the area of the first berm in the new section!! (Other roving work tonight also)
We'll be out there this evening taking a shot at perfecting the flow through there. Probably a mixture of tweaking the last half of the berm and the trail after the berm. We'll be working on the approach too.

Yeah that should work...it's a large dead branch. The rest of the tree landed on the side of the trail. I couldn't move it because the branch was between two trees.

Rode tonight. Trail condition is suprisingly good. The usual standing puddles on the beginner trail were all I encountered. The leaves and sand washes make for some interesting corners though.

Saw 3 deer. Ride with your head and eyes up for best results.

Tree down on intermediate just after the first XC/walking trail crossing where the bench is. Probably 10-12 inch diameter.

There is a large rock that has dislodged on the climb after the gnome log. It has rolled downhill and stopped against a log. Bummer, but it can be put back into place rather easily.

Trail is in excellent shape.

The trees are now out of the way, but watch out going into the beginning of Stooge's Run. We were only able to shove the big tree about halfway off of the trail, and it is an area where you are going reasonably fast. We'll need a chainsaw to finish the job.

A couple small puddles remain in the beginner loop (end of the ride). We will need to do some minor repair to fix those spots. For now, just wheelie through the middle of them.

Enjoy.

Please note that there has been a trail change.

In the area we call the upper bypass (rocky area just before you ride down to the X entrance) has been re-routed. You will come into it lower, circle back and ride the rocky part backwards, head to your right and climb up to the highest point of leb, then back down meeting the existing trail (kind of an S curve kind of thing).

At the very top there is a big rock you can ride over. This is the highest point of Leb. (maybe we'll hang a bell to ring or something)

The trail is intermediate, but it is not packed in and can be a little tricky as there are a lot of rocks in there.

Enjoy!

I went in with a rogue hoe and tried to drain the worst spots in the beginner loop as well as block off the ride-arounds that were forming. If riders slow down you should be able to ride straight through or just skirt the edge of the mud.

11/13 We have had rainy/snowy weather for several days now. With the cold cloudy weather, the trail will take a long time to dry. At this point, our only hope is that the temperature drops and stays below freezing.

So unless we get a bunch of clear sunny days in a row (doubtful), please limit your rides to times when it is well below freezing and the trail/puddles/mud have had enough time to freeze over.

Remember, any ruts that you leave in the trail will likely be there all winter. So, please be courteous and don't ride when it is wet. Wait for it to freeze so that it will be fun and fast for everybody.

Thanks :)

I was hiking at Lebannon at 4pm today when I talked to a biker getting ready to enter the trail. He figured with all the cars in the lot, the trail was ok to ride. I mentioned it was pretty wet, probably closed, and that he should check the MORC site for conditions. I should have mentioned the cars were mostly for the high school cross-country ski team that trains there, but the conversation left me wondering if there is a need for a "too wet to ride" or "Please don't ride when wet" sign at the trail entrance. What's the right way to figure out if the trail is too wet? It seems like the old "trail conditions" on this site were a bit more clear on this issue.... Thanks.

bigwheel
11-14-2008, 09:42 PM
(This should be in another thread) John, welcome to MORC and thanks for your membership. It simply isn't feasible for one of the dirt bosses to make a run to Leb every day (or less) just to hang up or take down a "too wet to ride" sign. Plus, we'd rather avoid micro-managing the trail. If it is wet, please switch to urban/pavement. If people can't figure it out and ride when they shouldn't, Dakota County will have no choice but to close it down during these volatile swings. I'd prefer to avoid this situation, but it will take everyone's cooperation.

All that said, I think we *might* have a window of opportunity on Saturday morning 11/15. That is *IFF* predictions are correct. It is supposed to get cold overnight (Friday night), and not go above freezing until Saturday afternoon. So, Saturday morning might be frozen enough to ride.

Again, if the temp is above or near freezing or the trail is wet, pleeeeease stay off of the trail.

Sunday is supposed to be back into the mid-30's. If so, consider the trail to be closed.

Trail was pretty good. Most of it was frozen with a light coating of snow.

There are a few small puddles in problem areas on the beginner loop. Hopefully, these will also freeze over, because it is doubtful the ground will warm up enough for us to make any more repairs. For now, the easiest way through the puddles is to pull up on the bars so that your front wheel misses it, and let your back wheel go right through the middle.

Monday and Tuesday are supposed to stay below freezing, so it looks promising for riding. Watch for slippery rocks and bridges.

Based on Gregg's post from Tuesday that the trail is frozen, and with the cold weather this week, is it safe to assume the trail is open and good to go for tonight?

Also, with tomorrow's high predicted at 34 degrees, that wouldn't be enough to soften things up for an afternoon ride would it?

I'm eager to get out there but I don't want to mess up the trail in any way either. Thanks! Shad

Currently the trail is frozen and ok to ride.

If temps rise above freezing please do not ride.

There is some grey area in there but honestly the trail softens up even below freezing with direct sun so its easiest to draw a line somewhere.

If temps get above freezing for an extended timeframe while we're in this freeze/thaw we will get Dakota to close the trails down more permanently. Please remember even if there is no gate closed or tape over the entrance it still doesn't mean the trail is open to ride. As always, don't ride when wet or when we're in a thaw.

If there is tape or the gate is closed you should NEVER ride. At that point it is not up to the individual rider. Closed means closed, period.

Note: Starting this weekend and into next week temps look to be above freezing all week long. We are talking to Dakota about closing the trail/lot until temps go below freezing again, which doesn't look to happen until late next week.

Stay tuned for trail closings. As it is I would not plan on riding Leb this weekend.

Get your riding in today while you can.

In anticipation for a string of warmer weather, Dakota County will be closing the trails and lot Saturday morning and will not re-open until temps get back below freezing consistently.

Most know this is to protect the trails during thawing, which has much more impact on the trails than rain.

Please DO NOT ride Lebanon Hills until further notice. Pass this along to your friends...

Just a reminder that Lebanon Hills is closed until further notice due to freeze/thaw conditions.

The lot is closed. As of tomorrow the trails will be taped off as well, as it seems many are not getting the message and are parking elsewhere.

If we want Leb to continue staying open all year round we will all work together to be sure we stay off the trails when they are closed. If not we will lose our winter riding ability and be forced to close the trail in the off season like many other trails.

Lebanon Hills is now open.

Please remember - its best to stay off the trail if the temps climb above freezing. Even at or below freezing the sun can warm the trail and bring out frost. Frost happens regardless of rain/snow, and the damp parts of the trail are NOT the ones you see from the parking lot.

Its real simple. Watch the temps, don't even attempt to go riding if its forecast above 32 that day. This is even less rocket science than monitoring for rain during summer months.

If people will follow this guideline we can avoid future closings. If people do not we will close again until we are well into winter.

Now, hope for some snow that allows us to start packing the trail in. Get those snowshoes ready...

Ride safe, enjoy....
