I caught some nice air off the exit rock jump.

Maybe we should make it an official B line this summer!

I thought it already was.

We really need to enhance more take-off ramps this year. I can think of three good ones.

Tues 2/19. Excellent! Packed snow with a reasonably wide patch. Ridable with pretty much any kind of tire. This is probably the best it's been all winter.

Get your rides in now, because it won't be long before it gets shut down for spring thaw.

Yes!!
That would be awesome if we can add more jumps.

Yesterday the trail was mashed potatoes. The combination of skinny tires and warming temps started to churn things up a bit where climbs started to get a little tricky.

Today is supposed to be even warmer yet. ALthough we're nearing the end of our winter riding season, its still good to get your ride in early when the temps are lower and you won't mess up the trail as much for others that want to ride.

No studs necessary yet. The fatter the tire the better at current conditions. As things churn up even more those real thin tires are not going to get you very far.

[quote=gopherhockey;269968]Yesterday the trail was mashed potatoes. The combination of skinny tires

I love the fact that skinny tires are now 2.1, 2.3, 2.5! I got a chance to ride Leb yesterday on 2.3" tires and it was hilarious. I never felt like I had control...and as it turned out, I didn't. What a fun trail! One of the reasons winter riding is so great is the trail changes depending on snow or ice or simply snow moisture content. You can't "memorize" a trail in the winter, I don't believe.

Get out there early folks before the melting season shuts it down!!

Last night, the trail was in great shape. The weekend ruts got nicely re-packed.

Most of the trail is hard packed and getting fast. Studs will help a little, but they are not necessary. As long as the temps stay reasonably close to or below freezing, it should be in good shape through the weekend.

Get in your rides now, because spring thaw (trail closing) is right around the corner.

Rode a lap today at 10:30 and another at Noon. Better grip in the AM, but still good in the afternoon..

Trail is still in good shape. Only two spots where the sun hits directly, causing problems. One is in the new XX section, after the ladder climb, before the berm. The other is shortly after where Dream meets the beginner loop (same as other years). Both sections are not bad, and still ridable.

There is good packed snow, but if you happen to be riding just after a narrow-tire bike, you'll be fighting a rut on the uphills until the next set of fat tires ride through.

Studs will help, but are not necessary.

Weather forecast for Sunday is looking iffy. Your best bet for a ride on Sunday is to go early morning. If it starts raining, it would be best to stay off unitl it gets chance to re-freeze.

Looks like the cold weather is going to hold out, giving us one more bonus week of riding. I'm guessing it will be a little icy in spots.

But after this coming weekend, it looks like warm weather will be here. (If you believe the weather babe.) So, after this coming weekend, you probably should plan to switch to pavement for a while.

Once you see the orange fences, please stay off the trail, and help prevent your friendly neighborhood dirt bosses from popping an aorta.

Meanwhile, get your rides in this week while you can.

Just got back.

Hard packed and fast. Getting icy. The packed area is nice and wide. Studs are recommended, although you can still get by without them.

Most of the trail was excellent. Some narrow areas in the XX, and a few ruts toward the end of Dream, where it looks like someone got stuck in the warm stuff. Nothing bad.

Go ride it. This might be your last week. If you have studs, you'll be flying.

Wed night, Mar 5

The couple inches of new snow made it a little tougher riding. Still in good shape, but not as nice and fast as before. The packed area is getting narrower, and there are a few spots where you drop into a rut and hope for the best.

Studs or very-wide tires have a slight advantage, but it's still decent on knobbies.

It's worth getting over there for the few remaining rides. It's supposed to be 40 degrees on Monday, so this weekend could be your last chance for winter riding at Leb.

Rode tonight, monday, done by 630.
Trail is still very good, at least for the pug.
The ice spots have grip to them now.
Some good snow ruts, get in and enjoy the ride.
Glad it wasn't closed too early.

Glad it wasn't closed too early.

We'll be monitoring it. If it gets into the mid 30s to upper 40s with no chance of cooling down for a while we'll probably pull the plug. (this week is looking bad) We left it open too long last year and suffered some damage. Can't take that chance this year.

It will help to have people posting up conditions almost daily now...

.......................
Glad it wasn't closed too early.

The obvious implication here is that another popular trail (could it be near downtown Minneapolis?) was closed too early.

Let's think about this a bit. Weather and warming temperatures can be very difficult to predict. Also, most trail stewards & their support crews have regular jobs & family obligations that prevent them from being able to instantly jump out there & close trails when it gets warm, & re-open them when it cools off, etc.

If one thinks about this some more, it's obvious that there must either be some periods when the trails are closed when they are OK to ride, or the trails will be open when they are too soft to ride.

Now, which is best: a) sacrifice some riding because the trails were closed by conservative estimates of weather trends?; or b) maximize the time the trails are open and cause the inevitable damage that results when conditions are too soft?

I'd like to think that most riders would willingly choose option (a) when they understand what the trail stewards are up against. So please give them a break when the trails are closed due to their best judgement and conditions happen to perfect for riding. Knowing the trail stewards and their love of riding as I do, they are probably hurting worst of all when the trails are closed and the riding conditions are good.

After yesterday's warmth and the forecast showing a lot of melting we're going to contact Dakota County and CLOSE the trail.

This is the big old orange fence permanent no question you cannot ride until mid April if all goes well so please stay off and get used to your trainer or junker bike trail closing....

SPREAD THE WORD TO ALL OF YOUR FELLOW LEB RIDING FRIENDS....

Stay tuned here for info on re-opening. Again, we will work with Dakota County to agree on a re-opening date and time - its not up for inspection and testing, even if you are a regular or MORC member. Orange means stay off - we all thank you for your patience this time of year!

I'll re-open this thread when we get closer to re-opening time.

A few trails in the area seem to be opening... so I went and double checked Leb and this is what I saw. (and this in one of the typically DRY areas of the trail - didn't even look at the X or beginner which are typically the worst)

TRAIL IS STILL CLOSED!!! (I'd say sometime next week ONLY if we get good drying weather and no rain)

No trail showing this kind of conditions should be open.... you can tell that while the top seems to be firming up *slightly* that the whole trail is damp from frost still coming out. What we'll eventually see is the top layer starting to dry slightly, which is a sign we're a few days away.

All of this damage will have to be fixed before any new trail or features will go in.

... there was still snow in the woods as I drove over there.

Checked Leb this morning. Its in no better shape than when I posted the pics... in fact the recent rain has things even worse I'm afraid.

We would really like to open things up in the next week but the weather doesn't appear to want to cooperate.

Looks like maybe one rider since I was there last - and they probably didn't have much fun out there by the looks of it.

Sorry.. trail still closed. Opening will depend on the weather.

Ted, Ryan and I hiked most of the trail on Sunday afternoon. A few things:

1. We saw NO poachers out there.. and it was around 66 degrees at the time. Thanks to everyone who stayed off!
2. Most of the damage has been done on north facing areas that get a lot of shade. Some fairly deep ruts, but the areas are small and should be able to be repaired.
3. The frost is for the most part out, but the top of the trail is a bit soft and I think mass riders would still do damage.
4. If we were to avoid rain over the next few days we may open. Lets hope the weather cooperates.

Once we open it would be nice if we could get a bunch of people to do some sane laps without a lot of high speed turns and skids. If we could get a good base of riders packing things down while its still a little soft we would have a good base for this years riding.

Stay tuned possibly Tuesday for more details. We also have to contact Dakota County for approvals etc.

Checked the trail today. It seems any progress we made over the weekend was taken away by the recent rain. There is a good inch of wet soil on top of the trail that needs to dry up a bit more before we can get people rolling through.

If we don't get the rain forecast for this week maybe by the weekend we will open things up.. but keep a watch and don't assume as the weather man is not cooperating with us.

Its been raining, cold and even snowing the last few days. Leb is nowhere near opening... and by the looks of the forecast when it finally warms up it is supposed to rain again.

Please don't get anxious when you see the sun come out. We need sun, wind and warm weather - and a few straight days of it - to dry out.

Looks like we'll be opening sometime in May this year. Sorry folks....

Trail opens today at 6pm: http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?p=281193#post281193

This thread is now open for posting trail conditions.

Please do not clutter the thread with non-condition related discussion. If you wish to discuss something related to Leb, please open another thread. We need to be sure that people looking for trail conditions will find the very latest information at the top of the thread and not have to dig around for it.

If you ride Leb and have an update, please feel free to post up.

As always, don't ride wet trails... we're expecting rain later this week and likely the trail will re-close during any extended rains. Dakota installed new gates and they will be using those this year.

Also remember, the parking lot being open doesn't necessarily mean the trails is open. We have the lot closed as a courtesy when the entire park is in bad shape but even then they dont' want to close the entire park if they can manage specific trail closures within the park.

Go Ride NOW (April 30, 4pm)

We just got back from making our passes on the trail.

Everything is now cleared, except for 3 big downed trees. One on the X-out, One just after the big log pile on the exit trail, and one in a fast section on Dream.

John will be out there with a chainsaw this evening. If you come up on him, please stop to see if he needs a hand moving the logs off of the trail. They are big, and it will take more than one person to move them.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Remember, It is supposed to rain Thursday through Saturday. Once the rain shows up, please stay off until it dries out. We'll post up. Thanks.

Sun is out today, but we had a lot of rain lately. Leb won't be ready to ride at all Sat. and its doubtful Sunday (since it was quite soft still when the rain came)

BTW: the other day, Bob, Ted, Craig and I were all out removing the trees that had fallen over winter. Thanks guys - trail should be clear now.

With the sun and wind we may be able to ride tomorrow late afternoon... it all depends on how much soaked in. Will check the trail tomorrow morning and report back. Its anyones guess, but things aren't going to dry up like they do in the summer when the trail is hardpack.

Today Leb is too wet.

Checked the trail out today. There were very few riders in the lot (THANK YOU to all that stayed off). Things were not as bad as I would have thought, but it was still damp and I could see damage being done by tire tracks. I think if the weather stays sunny and windy we can ride in the afternoon tomorrow (Sunday).

As always, we appreciate everyone who gave up their day of riding to help the trail dry out.

The tree is down on the Dream. Past the off-camber left, past the hairpin right turn, then 100 yards or so farther, just after the trail crosses the hiking trail is where the tree is down.

There is a good sight line, so there is plenty of time to stop. There are no branches so it's easy to toss your bike over and hop over it.

We'll plan to get it tomorrow evening.

Stealing Pete's Murphy comment as Leb had about the exact same: The trail received even more rain since trailwork ended... looks like about .25" of rain so far with more on the way.

Trail will most likely be too wet to ride all day on Sunday... there is a lot of moisture in the soil right now. Judging by the forecast, it should be ready on Monday.

A Reminder About When To Ride, And When Not To...

- Trails should not be used during wet weather, or when the trail is soft or muddy.

- Trails are open if the trail is firm and the surface will not be disturbed by foot or bike travel.

- PLEASE be patient if the trail isn't ready.

- Riding wet trails damages the trail by creating ruts that increase erosion.

- Trails are typically too wet to ride for 18-24 hours after a significant rainfall.

5/25 - great condition... almost on the dry side already. Need some more rain to keep things in place.

Was out trimming out some of the crazy mustard plants that are taking over the trail. Why? Because it looks bad... and you know us, we're all about the manicured trail :eyeroll: No, seriously because it starts to cut down on the visibility of what is coming up on the trail, and I was noticing a lot more skidding as people came around corners not knowing what was coming next. I hope to get out and do the XX tomorrow. The first part of the trail isn't too bad.

We missed the heavy rains that hit the north metro earlier this evening. As long as it doesn't rain tonight the trail should be good to go tomorrow.

PLEASE check before riding tomorrow to be sure we didn't get rain overnight. As always, stay off wet trails... it doesn't look like much chance it will rain, and if it does its likely going to end by midnight.

(lazy today so I'm stealing Petes awesome post)

Looks like the south metro has received almost an inch of rain so far tonight, and judging by the forecast the trail will likely be too wet to ride until sometime on Saturday.

Here's a reminder about the trail rules at Leb:

When To Ride, And When Not To...

Thanks!

As posted over in the Murphy conditions, the south metro just got a major dump of rain. Trail was already wet to greasy, which means this sets it back probably another day.

I will be contacting Dakota County to request the trails be closed for tomorrow. Please revise your ride plans.

Hopefully we'll be back in business Sunday, or perhaps really late tomorrow if the sun is out and its really windy.

The trail and the parking lot were closed today (Sunday). Thanks to Dakota County for helping out by keeping the lot closed.

Just checked things at around 6:30 and its still rather damp out there, lots of wet spots. I would suggest waiting until tomorrow (Monday) afternoon at the earliest.

Start rant:

Of course even with the lot closed and trail closed signs up, there were people going around the gates and riding anyway. How anyone can be that selfish or ignorant is beyond me. Sorry but its not lack of knowledge that has these people simply ignoring the signs and fences.

I spoke to one guy coming out of the trail... "yea, I just rode in a little ways.. they are closed for good reason.. would hate to wreck the trails..." He had just done a full lap, and he rode away too quickly for me to ask why he felt it was his decision to make anyway. (he lives nearby and I have seen him poaching before)

Many of the wet spots that are there right now wouldn't be if people weren't poaching wet trails to begin with...

Anyway, end rant. Thanks to all who actually read trail conditions and then actually follow them.

I really in some ways wish we all paid 10 bucks or something for a season pass at leb<ST1:p</ST1:p At least one that covered the MTB trail. And in doing so we signed an agreement that stated that if we are caught using the trail without our pass or using the trial when it was marked closed that you could be fined X dollars and/or have your pass revoked. This ikind of thing is done on some of the cross country ski paths in the winter. These people who do this are the same ones in 1st grade who cut in line. Mainly because there's no incentive for them not to do something if there is no "real" punishment. Plus they know you guys will fix the trail damage they do.
<O:p</O:p

If we had enforced passes at least these folks would help fund all the hard work you put into these trails.
<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

I'm sure those who could do this know why this can't be done or why it shouldn't. Has it been looked at though?

Trail is greasy in spots... be careful on fast downhills as they sneak up on you right in the corners. X and XX have some wet areas, please ride carefully in these areas if you must do these loops.

Watch for rain this week - any small amounts will close the trail down again.

Trail is seeing some more rain this evening, with the forecast not looking so good.

Please... give the trail some time tomorrow to dry out and watch the weather before riding.

We're fighting a lot of rain lately and sitting on the edge of closing the trail for a while to let things dry out. Its all going to depend on people using common sense and giving it some time.

Please watch the weather, and get your ride in now if you need one. Even a normally insignificant rainfall will close things down for a while.

Better sneak in a ride while you can. Any new rain will likely make it too wet again.

Also, try out the new reroute at the bottom of the final dream downhill. You should be able to hold a little more speed at the end now. Thanks to everyone that worked on it.

Wed 6/4 9pm

Trail was damp, but ridable. Right on the edge of okay/not. Any more rain, and you should stay away.

Some minor damage from damp ground riding over the last few days:
* Several rocks were knocked loose and now on the side of the trail.
* The jump-off log in the fast (early) section of the Joey trail is knocked out and on the side of the trail.
* Berms forming on a bunch of turns, and will begin holding/diverting water.

Nothing major, but we will have to devote a trail work session to repairing this stuff.

Don't forget that this Saturday is National Trails Day at Leb. Between about 8:30 and 1pm the parking lot will need to be used by those volunteering for the event.

If you are planning a ride this weekend, PLEASE schedule it before or after the event so that we can reserve parking for those attending the event.

There are also other areas to park if you must ride... over on the Galaxie side, or over on the street by the tennis courts off Covington. Please use one of the alternate locations if you can't re-schedule your ride.

Thanks so much!!!

Sunday reminder: Trails and parking lot are still closed. Expect to re-open Monday, pending any additional rain.

We got even more rain last night on top of a trail that was just starting to recover.

This is a Dakota County closing, so you are trespassing if you ride. (among other things) I saw two cars parked outside the (closed) lot on Johnny Cake Ridge Road the other day get ticketed as they were not only parked in a no parking area, they were using a closed trail. I want to get details on what those tickets cost.

I went out and hiked Leb today... its very wet. The ground is holding all its moisture and you can see foot or tire tracks.

I wouldn't count on a Monday opening.

Caught 4 kids riding in there.. as soon as they saw me they were like "oh S#)$(*"... hard to be too upset at kids, but they DID know better. They said "ok, we won't do a second lap..."

Sat there for a while and saw a LOT of riders come up, look at the sign, then ride away without even a grumble. At least there are some that can read. I was surprised at how many actually ride into the trail.

Anyway, this is about trail conditions and its WET.

Dakota County is opening Lebanon Hills this morning.

Please use caution.. we have no idea how many trees that may have falled over the trail, and there is a lot of debris due to wind and rain.

Thanks to everyone who stayed off the trails while they were closed. We know it can get frustrating having to wait, and it can seem strange to have a trail closed on a day that is sunny and windy... but at the same time we have to remember that it takes a day like that to dry the trail.

This year looks to be wetter than normal. We will really try our best to keep the trail closings down to a minimum. If everyone were like most of you, we wouldn't have to close them at all.

Report from the trail: I just got a call that there is a big unavoidable tree down on Dream II (first intermediate section of trail) just after the rock ride and just before where the trail splits right to hit the jump or left to go around.

This is a downhill section and I was told the tree sneaks up on you fast if you are not looking.

If you don't know exactly where this is, just ride with caution until we get a chance to clear the trail.

06-10-2008, 03:33 PM
Also please use caution as the trail pretty much looks like it got hit by a storm. Lots of eye pokers, arm scrapers, spoke catchers, neck hangers, overgrown vegetation. That being said, condition is good, and I love the new little section. Good job Leb Crew!

After this rain ends, I think someone needs to hit the trail with clippers and a weed wacker because it was already pretty over grown. Last night there was one branch that seemed like it wanted to clothesline someone not paying attention. There is another tree down in XX on the loop before the teeter that is a ride stopper. No branches on it, but too high for most if all to bunny hop.

Disaster on Wheels
06-11-2008, 05:15 PM
There is a low branch on the last down hill right before the new section. It is pretty easy to ride under, but I guess if anyone tall (Bob) is tearing down that hill, they might not see it in time. I guess if anything, use caution.

I agree that some small maintenance might be in order for the next trail work session. the log drop in the x section fell apart and there was a lot of debris in the trail. The rain also really made all the plants go crazy in there.

I had done trimming of the entire X, Dream and the last half of XX (all by hand) a few weeks ago. It probably needs more work but I'm thinking that area won't probably need much.

I think nita was working up dream II. That means we would need to finish that, do Joey, and the first half of XX.

I'd like to get a ride in to see for myself where the trouble spots are... doesn't look like thats happening soon, but perhaps before next Tuesday.

I also tire-swept a bunch of larger clutter off the trail.

Thanks for helping out! I was told many of the main eye slappers could easily be trimmed back by riders.. so if anyone feels the need feel free to help us keep those things cleared.

If you've never seen Dave tire-sweep clutter you are missing out... its pretty cool. Again, if people see stuff on the trail feel free to pick it off... we don't have to wait for a full trail crew to show up to get most of the obvious stuff cleared away.

Leb is open.. but please read a few things:

There are wet spots along the trail. Please - ride directly through these, not around... if you are willing to ride when there are damp areas you need to be willing to get your bike a little dirty. We want to avoid trail creep and even more damage and maintenance.

The later in the day you wait the better... there are still damp areas. I couldn't verify the X/XX so those may be on the edge. If the intermediate loop is iffy then give those areas more time.

I have not verified downed trees or eye pokers, so please ride with caution.

Lastly, when the trail is damp like it is it is vulnerable to skidding and fast cornering etc. Please avoid tearing up the trail as it continues to dry out.

Thanks again, as always, to those who stayed off while it was closed.

Trail is tacky with some damp spots, mostly in the corners. Definitely eye pokers out there, but no trees over the trail that I saw.

Got there a little earlier than the gate opened up and noticed cars parking along Johnny Cake Ridge Road.

This is a NO PARKING road. (look on all the street signs and you will see the no parking logos) We're making mountain bikers look bad when we do that kind of thing. Be patient, get there a little later, or park legally on another street.

I didn't today, but when I see people parking there when the trail is closed I call the PD and the vehicles are ticketed. I wouldn't be surprised if those out there today were ticketed as well.

You are very welcome. Sorry to everyone that had their ride disrupted by the trimmer and for all the trimmings lying on the trail. That stuff dies off real quick, its not really worth the effort to clear most of it.

So far the bypass climb, the upper bypass down to the X entrance is done, and the xx from Jan's rock back to the first bridge is mostly done. Earlier in the spring I did the X and the second half of the intermediate but those area are growing up again - probably need trimming this fall.

Now its the joey trail, the open field before the beginner loop, and the first 1/3 of XX I think that need the most attention.

Trail was drying up nice this afternoon. Should be good to go tomorrow morning if the rain stays away.

Some moron rode on the new (under construction) trail today and left a pretty nice rut through the whole thing. Perhaps this person wanted us to delay the opening by a few weeks...

The obvious = the new trail (for those who know where it is) is not open for riding. Not only does it do damage to ride on a trail that isn't ready yet, its not safe...

Trail should be good to go today.

Watch for possible trail trimming on the first half of the XX today.

Tomorrow (Monday) watch for trimming happening over on the Galaxie side (Thanks Sam Chagani for volunteering to trim tomorrow!)

Trimming is necessary to keep the eye pokers off riders, but also to keep sight lines open and maintain the flow of the trail. We apologize for the inconvenience but I don't know anyone who'd rather ride in the weeds... Remember that trimmers rarely see or hear you coming, so when you see the caution signs please SLOW DOWN. Thanks!

Again, watch for trimming tomorrow (Monday) morning over on the Galaxie side.

No worries Tom :) I was concerned I wouldn't wave the hedge trimmer on some unsuspecting rider. That would really lead to an unfriendly biker.

I opted for the "Backward Sweeping Method" (this is a name I made up during the trimming exercise) . Walking backwards while sweeping the hedge trimmer on the weeds and brush that's on the single track. Walking backwards, so I could see if there were any bikes coming through.

Good fun and a new found appreciation for what John and the volunteers do for our trails.

I walked some of the trails this morning just before noon - primarily the expert loop. Surprisingly, I thought the trails were in good shape - a little soft in a few spots but otherwise pretty good. I would think it would be rideable by late afternoon/evening, but I'm no expert. (nor am I in charge :)) A few trees down though. One right before the camel-hump and a few others in miscellaneous spots.

I also saw a handful of people riding the trail, but fortunately I don't think they were causing much damage given the that the trails weren't very wet.

We are debating this.... its less of a good thing to have a huge group ride just hours after a rain, but for individuals it might be different.

Tough call to make. I typically take the safe route and just give it time as I don't care to chance it and I also don't like riding damp trails any more than powder dry trails... but...

Ok here is the deal.

Leb got a good shot of rain, but it can be tough to know how quickly it can rebound. There is no real way any of us can check for sure.

Suggestion is to avoid large group riding at the very least. (join us on the OC urban ride!)

If individuals head out, please use good judgement and post up or spread the word if things are good or bad. Perhaps ride as late as you can to give maximum drying time.

If you can at all be patient and ride dirt another day, give it tonight off just to be on the safe side. There is no harm in that.

It's not very good out there yet. Not yet what I would call tacky.
Overall, the trail is rinced clean of loose sand but it all washed to the low and flat spots along with water in the lowest holes.

The worst spots are in the warm-up loop with some long squishy mud patches. The main trail only has a few holes that can't be hopped over but some corners will get bermed if ridden too fast.

I start on the galaxy side so I got to the worst of it 3/4 of the way through my lap. If I had started with the beginner loop, I wouldn't have continued.

Thanks Dave for checking and for posting up!

Goes to show us all that we really try do our best to get people back out on the trail as quickly as we think is posisble, but often patience is really the best. A few hours of sun typically will not dry out .25" of rain. I hope others like Dave were light on the trail last night if you rode at all.

I'd give it until evening if you have to ride at all. We have seen before (just a week or so ago) that just a couple of hours of sun doesn't necessarily dry out a wet trail. (especially when its humid out)

While 85% of the trial is tacky, the 15% that is damp is getting a little damaged - especially on the climbs and in tight turns. There are no ruts but I had to ride very softly and it wasn't very fun.

I would stay off until tomorrow. If you ride hard you will damage the trail.

Good options would be to safely go backwards out, take the ski trail out, take the Galaxie exit, skip the X/XX (if the intermediate is iffy, those are probably bad). Unfortunately there will always be poachers, but at least we have a good number of riders who respect the trail and each other.

This Tuesday, July 29th, we will be digging up a section of the exit intermediate trail (Dream Trail) starting around 2pm.

We ask that riders avoid riding Leb between 2pm and 7:30pm to avoid conflicts.

If you do ride, you will likely be asked to stand around for considerable lengths of time to avoid danger when the machine and workers are on the trail. Unfortunately there is no way around this.

A better plan would be to start your ride no earlier than 7pm... if you start around that time you may get a chance to try the new trail. Or better yet, come join the crew as we work to get the new trail opened up! (see trailwork thread here (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27684))

Considering the new trail is not packed in like the existing trail it would be a good idea to stay off today. The rest of the trail might be ok, but my guess is the new trail is soft enough to get some damage. There is no way to skip the new trail either.

A tale of two trails

The old trail is 95% tacky sweetness. You can ride hard and do no damage. Even the 5% of the trail that is damp is fine, if you are keeping things under control.

The new trail is 50% damp - 50% tacky. I walked about 1/4 of the trail, because tire tracks were evident. The rest of the trail, I rode softly and that seemed to be okay.

IMO, unless you are willing to walk part of the new trail, it would be best to wait to ride until tomorrow afternoon.

Most importantly: until they dry, PLEASE STAY OFF THE BERMS in the new trail! They will get torn apart if you ride them wet.

When I started, the trail was dry. By the time I finished, the trail was still mostly dry. There were quite a few small patches of superficial surface moisture but the trail fine.

Very little rain got through the trees - almost none in the new section (which doesn't feel new anymore).

Nice report, thanks for keeping us updated!

If you'd stop riding every single day things probably woudln't get old so fast ;) We appreciate the reports though!! :) Remind me not to let you lead on our group rides tho...

Trail is getting dry.

Trail fairly was out and packed in a few of the rocky areas that are starting to come apart. Again, not trying to make things easier - but if we don't keep them packed in we'll lose them.
