View Full Version : Wolverines
I rode Lebanon yesterday morning and didn't encounter any large animals on the trails (deer etc.). As I was leaving I tried reading a notice on the sign board and wonder if Iwas reading correctly. That is, to report any signs of Wolverines in the park. Is this correct?

I saw a really large wild turkey in the middle of the trail at the top of the parking lot climbout...does that count?

Yes, there has been a report of a wolverine on the loose in Lebanon. We missed a meeting with Dakota due to the report coming in last Tuesday.
Since then Tim and I found half a deer on the bike path when we were out flagging re-routes... probably wasn't the wolverine though.
We have been told to tell people never to approach a "kill" that you may find on the trail, but to report it. Apparently a wolverine will attack mainly when its kill is in jeapordy.

I once saw a racoon on the trail at night. It just ran along the trail in front of me, not thinking to jump to the side. I didn't know what else to say or do, so I yelled "Racoon!" and it finally left the trail. Weird.
I dunno about wolverines, but last summer after seeing Signs I rode the trail at night and BOY I was freaked out! I was waiting for the aliens to come out of the dark woods and abduct me. :alien:

I coulda SWORN I saw a mountian lion galloping down the trail in front of me. It certainly wasn't a Coyote, as it was much larger than them, nor was it a large dog. It had a loooong tail that was dark at the end, and had a very cat-like trot to it. I tried to get my camera out, but wasn't successfull. Needless to say I stopped, waited for Lisa and we continued on, all of a sudden VERY aware. I did find a partail print in the sand, and it indeed did look like a cat print. Spooky! I only wish I got a photo of it!

Then theres the time I saw the UFO parked off to the side of the trail, but I spooked it when I was about to take a photo :eyeroll:
Talking with Dakota, the report of the wolverine was from a very reliable source. I wonder what ever happened to that black bear that was sighted around Eagan and up north a couple cities last summer. That even made WCCO radio.
I wonder if I actually saw one of these dangerous animials could get me pedaling any faster.....

The wolverine escaped from the zoo last week. It actually has a name ("Pika") and is about 2-3 years old. It did not drop in from a UFO, and it wasn't riding on the back of a cougar. (Yes, there are cougars in Minnesota. They are a protected species, and that really may have been one at Jay Cooke.)
My information about the wolverine came from the Dakota County Park Patrol Chief. It may still be out there, or may not. It has not been re-captured yet.
Ride safe,
Hans
