Hi,

I would like to replace my front shock with a new one, right now I have what came with the bike, (RST something, Trek 820) I would like to get a Rock Shox Judy XC, so....Was wondering if I could get some advice, what all do I need to replace it? or will it just be take the old one out and put the new one in, well not that easy but you know what I mean...

Any help will be appreciated, I know I could bring it to a shop, but would rather learn myself.

Thank You..

Scott

what all do I need to replace it? or will it just be take the old one out and put the new one inI am assuming that it is a threadless fork/stem combo. All you will need is the right size allen wrenches, and a flat bladed screw driver, and a mallet, or hammer. Remove the wheel from the fork. Disconnect the brake. Loosen the bolts that hold the stem in place, on the side of it, Then remove the bolt on the top. After the stem is off the fork will be able to slide out. You will need to remove the crown race, the metal part that is attatched to the steerer tube near the fork crown. You can use the srewdriver and mallet to lossen it up, but....
I know I could bring it to a shop, but would rather learn myself.[ ...I would reccomend you go to the shop to get the crown race removed, and then when you install the new fork, the starnut as well. It is difficult to get in properly, and the shop can do it very easily.

I know this isnt all that detailed, but it will give you an idea on how to do it. If you need more help, just send me a private message. Also if you are looking for more detailed info about repair, I have The Barnetts manual up on one of my websites, the address for it is http://manual.filetap.com or it can be reached through http://www.umdbike.com

Maybe you have all the info. you need by now. But just in case you still want to do it yourself? The only other thing you might have to consider is cutting your fork down. If you have a large frame , then probably not. If you do have to trim the steerer tube i would use a saw guide. Like the Park tool saw guide. IT's not cheap at $26 bucks. Then file off the rough spots. IF you want to learn ,some shops will let you watch. It doesn't hurt to ask. It's not a hard job, but having all the right tools makes it easy.:)
