A generous donation from REI Co-op in Bloomington, MN, will allow the Backcountry Patrol to do more efficient, effective trail care while patrolling, and give patrollers shelter when giving talks and presentations. REI donated two Gerber Back Paxe hatchets, two folding shovels and two Sven folding saws, which take the place of non-folding tools, and a hatchet bought in Boy Scout camp 38 years ago. Even though patrol members have access to almost unlimited tools from the US Forest Service, those tools are difficult to carry in the BoB trailer or in panniers, due to their size and weight. The new tools will enable patrollers to have the right tools with them to do trail maintenance while patrolling.
REI also donated a 10' x 10' pop-up awning to the patrol to use for events such as National Trails Day, the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival and when giving talks on trail maintenance and minimum impact riding techniques. The pop-up will greatly enhance the Backcountry Patrol's ability to do outreach programs on mountain biking safety, and minimum-impact riding and camping techniques. The Patrol has applied for an IMBA/Clif Bar Trail Preservation Grant to enable one member to become a "Leave No Trace" Master Trainer, and produce mountain bike-specific LNT materials, as part of this program.
The Backcountry Trail Patrol Association would like to express their heartfelt thanks to REI for their support of this new National Mountain Bike Patrol, and for providing space for BTPA educational programs at their Twin Cities stores.
