This is what happens when I "work" from home ;)

After making the map, I thought about what someone said about naming the trails. Well, here's hopefully a good aid for people to name the trails! I just labeled each section (as I saw them) with numbers and people can just put a number next to a proposed name.

Just off the top of my head, I thought about:

1. Up and Away
2. Round About
4. The Backbreaker
5. Lower Bypass
6. Tangletown
7. Upper Bypass
8. Downtown
9. Way home

I like the thought of naming (or at least numbering) the trails. The Lebanon trail crew discussed the idea a while back and apparently Dakota County isn't too crazy about us doing this type of thing... or at least putting up any kind of "official" signs on the trails with names.

I do know that at least part of #2 you have shown has become unofficially the "Joey Trail" due to Joey Klein coming out from IMBA to help lay out the trail.

There is some discussion still about names, and I know the trail steward Dale Gundberg has a numbering scheme to the trails (to help with trail work and maintenance among other things) His list takes into account some of the trails that are in planning stages but aren't yet shown or in some cases not even flagged. (such as the climb out of the parking lot all the way up to #2)

I'd like to see something happen in this regard. Sure beats saying "hey, you know that section of the trail near the tree with the rocks and that root sticking out" ;)

That section *sucks*! Why'd you guys put the trail through there anyway?

I assume you were kidding :p

Yea, we tried to avoid all trees, rocks, and roots when we build the trails. Somehow it couldn't be avoided.. hehe...

Well, if you really want to avoid them, you should consider paving the trail, maybe level a few of the hills, too, and make the climbs more gradual, straighten out the curves. Then we could ride road bikes there!

(you can assume I'm kidding with my posts about 87% of the time  )

I know it's totally off the LH thread, but up at Simpson Creek (Chippewa N.F.) we are in the process of naming the trails after Bart, Homer, Crusty and the gang from Springfield.

We thought it was oddly appropriate.

How about the "Dale Trail" "Tim's Terror" "Klein's Crazy" and "Gopherhockey's Big Year"??:D

Ride safe,
Hans

I Like It!!!!!!

I also like the Idea of trails named after Simson's Characters at Simson Creek. There are so many choices to choose from, Mo, Apu, Sideshow Bob, Comic Book Guy.

Heck you could probably use a different one for each mile of trail and still have plenty left over.

BTW "Tim's Terror" would have to be his well known injury spot on the Double X heheheh

I think there is no need to post names on the trail but we should at least have some on our map.

I agree, doesn't hurt to have a map with names that we can use for both talking about the trail and for trail work etc.

We better engage Tim & Dale in this, they should probably get first crack at some of the names. I have heard "Triple-T" for the new xx loop (Tim's Terrible Trail) so we're already close with that one. Of course he has "Tim's Dream" trail already flagged out but not built... we can't have more than one trail named after the guy or he will start to think he is cool or something hehe :p

We do have "areas" of trails that have names too, like the big rock drop in the new xx loop is and forever will be Jan's Rock. Maybe we could name logs after people.. then again we'd argue about who's logs are bigger than others.. DOH!

I'd like to see a few trails named after or selected by prominent trail workers. Then I'd like to see a few maybe voted on by the public to make it more fun.

Or, maybe we go the route of the sports stadiums and have trails like "REI Loop" and "The Gravity Lab" and make a little $ from donations for the advertising ...

Why stop with just corporate trail names?

"This rocky switchback is brought to you by Bobby & Steve's auto world!"

"Nothing handles this downhill better than a full suspension bike from Erick's Bike Shop!"

(on the last stretch to the parking lot) "Don't forget to drink your Gatoraide! SuperAmerica!"

It'd prompt conversations like "Yeah, I was coming into that corner just a bit fast, had to duck to avoid the Denny Hecker's Auto Connection billboard, then popped off the Target logs and landed on Martha Stewart's forehead. That's hang time!"
