Welcome to the REI Events Update. We are breaking out of winter and heading for spring. This summer, REI will be sponsoring a 3-race adventure race series and we want you to be ready. Several of our clinics will help you acquire the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in this fast-growing sport. The pros are here, so don't miss this opportunity to get a jump on the competition. Rather skip the racing? We have several exciting slideshows and presentations to interest you, no matter what your sport or activity. Unless noted, all REI clinics and presentations are free and open to the public!

ADVENTURE RACING CLINICS



ENDURANCE SPORTS NUTRITION
Tuesday, March 11th at 7 PM
REI Bloomington

Carrie Peterson, M.S., R.D., L.D., will draw from her background as both a registered dietitian specializing in sports nutrition and as an endurance athlete, to tell you about eating plans for optimal training, racing, and recovery. Included will be discussion on a healthy diet for athletes, fluid needs, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and carbohydrate loading. Join us for an evening of outstanding nutritional information!



TAKE YOUR ROUTINE OUTSIDE

Winter is winding down and it is time to get outside! Join REI for an information packed clinic on returning your fitness routine to the outdoors. ADVENTURE RACING 101

You've seen the race footage on TV, but what does it really take to be an adventure racer? Join veteran racer Dan Williams as he discusses what it takes to get started, how to get connected with other racers, and information about local races and events. As a member of Team Northstar from the Eco Challenge New Zealand and Team Iron Range from the Eco Challenge Borneo, Dan has tons of knowledge and experience and he can help make your dream of adventure racing a reality.



INTRO TO ORIENTEERING
Wednesday, March 19th at 7 PM

Thursday, March 20th at 7 PM

Okay, the GPS tells you where you are, but what route will you take to get where you are headed? Members of the MN Orienteering Club will introduce you to the sport of orienteering, in which participants navigate unfamiliar terrain to find a series of checkpoints. They will cover the basics of compass use and teach you to decipher map symbols. Bring a compass and learn how to orient a map. Orienteering skill is a must-have for potential adventure racers!

Three Rivers Parks, the Minnesota Orienteering Club, and REI have teamed up to host a day full of orienteering activities for the beginner to the advanced. This is a great chance to sharpen your route-finding skills. Enter to win door prizes. Visit www.mnoc.org for more information.




CYCLING



NORTH DAKOTA'S MAAH DAAH HEY TRAIL
Wednesday, March 5th at 7 PM
REI Bloomington

The Maah Daah Hey trail weaves through the North Dakota badlands for nearly 100 miles, connecting units of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Mountain bikers flock here and horseback riders and hikers find a quiet and wild experience in the rugged backcountry. Representatives from the state's Office of Tourism will talk about this relatively new trail, explain what it has to offer, and give advice on trip logistics.





PADDLING



BOUNDARY WATERS TRIP PLANNING
Tuesday, March 18th at 7 PM
REI Bloomington



A jam-packed session on planning and preparing your own BWCAW adventure with trip-tested ideas and suggestions from an experienced REI staff member. Topics will include an overview of the BWCAW, information on permits, equipment, clothing, food and more! The program will be especially helpful for the inexperienced Boundary Waters traveler.



TRANS-CANADIAN CANOE EXPEDITION
Thursday, March 27th at 7 PM
REI Bloomington

Join REI and The Minnesota Canoe Association in welcoming Minnesota paddlers Mark and Norah Garrison. The Garrisons, who are local teachers, recently paddled 3400 miles from Lake of the Woods to Inuvik, just north of the Arctic Circle. They will show slides of their journey and discuss what it takes to complete such a fantastic journey.

WORLD TRAVEL 101 WITH HOSTELLING INTERNATIONAL

If your dream of a European Holiday is fast becoming a reality, do not leave home without us! Members of Hostelling International will showcase the great network of hostels, tailored for budget travelers, located throughout Europe. In addition, they will cover topics important to all travelers: Planning an Itinerary, Travel Documents, Saving & Carrying Money, Transportation and Health & Safety.

ALONE ACROSS THE ARCTIC WITH PAM FLOWERS

Alaskan author and explorer Pam Flowers will share slides and stories from her solo 2500 mile dog sledding trip from Barrow, Alaska to Repulse Bay in Canada. Pam has completed many expeditions and was given a gold medal by the Society of Women Geographers.



YMCA CAMP DAY AT REI
Saturday, March 15th from 11 AM to 4 PM
REI Bloomington

At YMCA Camps everyday is an adventure and what better place to learn about adventure than REI. The YMCA's of Minneapolis & St. Paul and REI have teamed up for a day of camping information and fun.

Adventure awaits kids ages 4-18 at one of the YMCA Camps. Stop by the camp tables in-store to pick up more information on each of the 22 YMCA camps.

Kids and parents can climb the REI Pinnacle, identify animal tracks, register to win door prizes, talk to camp staff and start down the road to adventure at YMCA Camping Day at REI!



HORIZONS WITH CRAIG BLACKLOCK
Monday, March 17th at 7 PM

Join the Inland Sea Kayakers and REI in welcoming Minnesota photographer Craig Blacklock. Craig will show slides from his new book Horizons and discuss the challenges of photographing from a kayak.



WHITEWATER FILM FESTIVAL
Sunday, March 23rd from 12 to 5 PM
REI Bloomington

TICKETS: $10

The Rapids Riders Whitewater Kayak & Canoe Club and REI are proud to bring you the best films from the National Paddling Whitewater Film Festival. Join fellow paddlers for a day of whitewater action on the big screen. A silent auction will be held throughout the day.

All funds raised will benefit the Mississippi Whitewater Development Corp. to assist in their efforts to bring a whitewater park to downtown Minneapolis.

AMERICA'S SERENGETI: ALASKA'S ARCTIC WILDLIFE REFUGE
Wednesday, March 26th at 7 PM
REI Bloomington

Join Canadian Peter Mather and the Minnesota Chapter of the Alaska Coalition for a multi-media slideshow featuring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Additionally, a native Gwich'in will speak about his people's ties to the land. The Alaska Coalition is dedicated to protecting the Refuge from development threats and will address actions to protect it.

Meet Team REI-Salomon Adventure Racers Barry Siff and Liz Caldwell as they share their Eco-Challenge and the Discovery Challenge World Cup Adventures. See images from their Tibet, and Borneo races as they give an overview of the sport. Learn how to train and get advice on finding team members and gear essentials.

CLASSES



CLIMBING CLASSES
1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the Month at 6 PM (March 5th /19th)
REI Bloomington Pinnacle

An introductory climbing class taught by a certified Vertical Endeavors instructor. Participants will learn about equipment, knot tying, belay technique, rope work, climbing commands, and safety issues.

The course is $20 for REI members, $30 for non-member and includes the use of climbing shoe and harness. Classes are offered from 6 PM - 9 PM. All students must be at least 14 years of age. Advanced registration and payment is required.

WOMEN ONLY CLIMBING CLASSES
2nd Wednesday of the month at 6 PM (March 12th)
REI Bloomington Pinnacle

A Women's only version of our introductory climbing class taught by a certified Vertical Endeavors instructor.
The course is $20 for REI members, $30 for non-member. Students must be at least 14 years of age. Advanced registration and payment is required.

FAMILY CLIMBING CLASSES
4th Wednesday of the month at 6 PM (March 26th)

The Family version of our introductory climbing class. Family classes are open to children under 14 who meet the height requirement and are accompanied in the climbing class by a parent.
