View Full Version : Have Your Say on Trails at Brownie Lake
Hello all, this is from our friend Matt Moore over at MOCA:
If you want MTB trails to live on near Brownie Lake in Minneapolis, you could take a few minutes and complete the survey.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FNNM7Y5
Planning is going on right now for this area, and if people (that’s YOU) want mountain bike trails to be there, it will likely happen. Without support, it’s less certain what might happen.
Past survey results from YOU helped make the Wirth Trails a permanent deal.
An additional trail section near Wirth Lake was recently approved by the Park Board
Now we’re working on adding other pieces including this one.

Not sure what i'm missing... when I log into survey monkey, i don't see anywhere for a brownie survey. It just tries to get me to start my own survey.

I just hit the link and it brought me right to the survey. Didn't get to the "make your own survey" page 'til afterwards.
I checked it out again, and it said 'thank you for taking the survey'
My guess is that the girlie already took the survey this morning from the same computer. May have to do it at work.
(on break of course because I know my superiors are watching:D)

Filled it out Shawn. I wrote not to change anything but let us trim it a few times. That is a tough 1 mile trail. Most people I bring there end up circling at the bottom while I do laps. Lets keep it that way.

Done and basically stated the same. Improve it by not changing it!

What are the plans for Brownie lake?
To me the potential is marginal. I'd give up Brownie for the Bog. Oh yeah.

There are no current plans for Brownie Lake. This survey was initiated and since Brownie has been historically used for mtn biking, we as mtn bikers are giving our input so that hopefully that area can continue to be used for mtn biking. The survey is asking about Brownie, so we are all showing our support for mtn biking as a future activity at Brownie.

It would not surprise me that the board is planning to pave a trail around the lake.

Yeah, everyone loves those darn paved paths. Hopefully we have a good turnout on the survey and we are at the table during discussions for use of the area.

Park board mission statement:
1) Find a lake.
2) Pave a trail around said lake.

Done.
Issue: now that they took all the locust trees out, the weeds are off the charts. With no canopy to shade the ground, the weeds will continue to choke out the trail, meaning lots of trim work.
Other issue: The trail, as it stands, is a poster child for sustainable trail building, especially after the particularly rainy summer we've had.
This is just an observation, not an accusation, complaint, or statement designed to insult the people who built it. If the canopy were still intact, it would probably be OK, but without those trees, the tread takes a beating whenever it rains. Whatever happens, the trail will probably have to change somewhat just to stay rideable.

The key at Brownie, I think, is the definition of rideable. Brownie has always pushed the definition out of the range of many. Not a bad thing if you are one of those left without challenge anywhere else.

Brownie has nostalgic value for some great crashes for me....it is also a very wonderful spot to see how strong of a single speed rider one believes oneself to be. I like the fact that people have passion about Brownie still....we need to get a few Target people to help clean up some of the area from their lots...wouldn't be a big stretch to see Target help keep the area maintained...the trail can be a nice cardio-hike over lunch hour I would think as well...
Those weeds are still making me itch bad when i get out of there, but better than a few weeks a go. I've been liking the few tough ruts down the hills (they look scarier than they are) but maybe we should pack them in before the ground freezes.
