Murphy Trail work Sunday May 30th 9:00am

It's a jungle out there! We'll be doing some trimming.

Weather permitting - if the weather is questionable check this thread for updates.

We meet at 9:00am at the main trail head (where you would park if you were riding the trail).
We'll supply the tools. Please wear long pants, boots, and gloves. Bring water and maybe a snack. Bug spray is also recommended.

If you've never been to trail work before, don't worry... someone will be here to show you the ropes. It is easy to learn, and it's fun, satisfying work.

If you are under 18 yrs old, bring a parent or guardian along.

I am excited about trail work tomorrow. With all of the cars I have been seeing in the lot this month, I am sure there will be a record turn out of people that feel guilty about all of the damage they have done to the trail this month. Now is your chance to help out.

I am sure that some think this thread is just here to let them know that there will be people working on the trail and they should watch out so they don't run into them. This thread is an invitation to all mountain bike riders that want to better their favorite trail. If you think that the trail is fun to ride now, I guarantee you will enjoy it even more if you help maintain it. It is hard to explain the feeling you get when you volunteer for trail work. The people are great, but we could sure use some more hands. There is a lot of trail out there and contrary to popular belief, it doesn't maintain itself. Since the rain that is on the way. Come on out and get dirty with us! It will be fun, I promise. If we see you riding tomorrow on the wet trail, don't be surprised if we pull you off your bike and hand you a shovel. Hee, Hee!

The rain just started falling at my house so I'm actually looking forward to doing some trail work since I can't ride tomorrow. See ya there.

BTW, anyone want to go out to grab some food afterwards?

Thanks to Saundra, Cam, Marshall, Jason, and Tom for coming out and helping. We were able to armor a flat mud hole at the beginner of the intermediate section (great job, rode it tonight and it was perfect), we also worked on repairing areas that were holding water, and finally (because we're tired of fixing water spots and trimming), we added a jump to the down hill side of the uphill rock garden option. We were not able to finish it yesterday because of a freak rain shower, so I went back tonight to finish it. It doesn't look like much now, but once it packs down we can shape it a little more to taste!

Here's Cam trying it for the first time. It's a start, you get a good floating feeling following the hill down. Airtime is airtime!

Yeah, we'll concentrate on the advanced loop. We will be cutting it back pretty far. It always comes back, especially in a wet year like this year. It's pain to trim and the farther you trim back, the longer it will take to grow back. I'd rather trim once way back than twice keeping the corridor visually tighter. Oh well, it needs a trimming. I think Leb did it just right.

Bummer...I wish I could be there because I am confident there is a way to trim it well once w/o opening the corridor so much it feels like we're on ski trails. I trust your judgement, but I definitely prefer riding single-track. Most of the thrill of single track is the tight corridor and the "unknown" around each corner...manicuring ends up being a let down. Trimming is a thankless job so I will thank you all in advance. Good luck guys!!

We should have 2 rock carts, they are a little more stable for rolling big rocks down the hills. The wheelbarrow with 2 wheels might be OK, but there is no way I would try using a single wheel one down the hills.

ryno lite
10-09-2010, 08:02 AM
We'll have one rock cart, but we'll have to make do. I can't pick up the Leb one because my tailgate isn't working right now. Just thought of that. The size of rocks we are hauling probably won't work with a wheelbarrow unless the two wheeled version can haul a lot of weight. We have all other tools available.

It is so cool because it is a good qualifier for our advanced loop and fun to ride as a roll over or jumping off the back. It is safe yet fun. It really turned out better than any of us thought it would. It just is a very appropriate qualifier. When you ride it, you will have no idea that it took 44 hours of work hauling in rocks and building the thing. I can't wait to ride it. Hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks to Doug, Cam, Marie, and Steve. We were able to move some rock and try to fix the damage from the water. The area after the rocks is still a little damp after we repaired it and may need to be revisited again, but it's a start. These rocks should keep the water flowing were it should. Thanks!

There is also a small change at the advance qualifier, we tightened up the entrance a little with a few rocks.

Nice work with the qualifier and the water damage repair. They both rode nicely. (I'm sure you already knew that.) Sorry I couldn't make this one, but you will see me plenty this summer.

If you are reading this, You obviously have an interest in this wonderful trail that we have to ride. If you haven't already volunteered for trailwork. I can't tell you how fun it is. It is truly addictive. I can guarantee that riding the trail that you help build/maintain will be much more enjoyable. This trail is awesome, but it could be better with your help. Do yourself and everyone that rides this trail a favor and come to a trailwork session.

If the weather goofs are right and it hits 100°, we may cancel. Check back later.

We will continue to work on our new little section/feature, cutting the trail and moving some rocks!

Weather permitting - if the weather is questionable check this thread for updates.

We meet at 5:30pm at the main trail head (where you would park if you were riding the trail).

Mike - you still going to have the trail work tomorrow? I haven't seen any updates since the other day, but I'll bring a change of clothes along to work. If you're there, I'll catch you guys about 6 on the trail.

I have a feeling this is gonna be us tomorrow at about the 28 second mark in this vid

Wish I would have thrown in the towel a couple weeks ago during the last hot spell. We were working at Elm Creek in 97 and humid weather. It was hotter than the 103 the next day. Good move, I was so hot I wasn't doing so well when we did it. We're all volunteers, no need to be miserable!

Some rocks were moved again in here.

Good crew of people came out. Thanks to Doug, Tom, Mike, Adam and Jerry.

Nice new oldschool line into some planted rocks. Appreciate the less is more approach. Over a stump to boot... Ha.

Flipside, looks like all the racing is widening the singletrack, and making sally lines around some of the roots and whatnot... That I don't like. The log curve skinny is getting more narrow though, more tricky in it's old age. +8

Alright all you trail working gods...let's get to work. A Sunday session at its best:

We'll be starting trail work next Sunday April 15th at 10:30 am. Projects yet to be determined but definitely bring ideas to the table on realistic features you'd like to see at Murphy. The ones there helping with the work get to see some ideas come to life :D

Meet at the shed at the trail head. No experience required at all. Tool will be supplied. Bring pants, sturdy shoes, gloves, snacks (for yourself) and water.

Let's get the trail work season started off strong! Post up if you'll be there so we know who to look for. Maybe we can do a ride afterward if we're not too tired from working ;)
