Not sure how strong you are, but I ride 34X20 there if I'm going to be riding more than a lap or two. I am not a strong rider - just average.

Have a 29 as well with 32/19 setup.Works good for me. A few of the climbs cry for a 20 and the flats scream for a 17.

"single peed gearing"
I only pee in one gear. Go and flush. Unless I'm in the woods. Then I just go and walk away.

At the race I used 36:18 on a 26" wheel. I should have used 36:17 in retrospect, a lousy start taught me that. For practice, I usually use 34:17 or 34:18 if I ride Hillside. One day I showed up with 34:16 and didn't realize it until afterward when my knees hurt a bit. I didn't really seem to go any faster with the higher gear, but I bogged down on the climbs sooner and had to make grunty sounds more often.
There's really no place to spin out a gear at Hillside except for section 2 by the balance beam, but that's a relatively short section, and usually I'm slugging down water over there. Every other place where you can go fast it's usually gravity providing the steam.
Talk about an awesome place to ride a SS though, Hillside is it! IMHO they oughta have the SS state championships there!
