Anybody have a general idea of what date this trail usually opens? My mind is apparently going and I can't remember last year.

Most trails open between mid-April and early May.

In a normal year, Theo would open between mid-April and early May like Ryan posted.

This particular year will be different. Three Rivers Parks, in conjunction with the MPRB, will be constructing a segment of the Luce Line through the park this spring and will be closing the off road trails for the duration of construction.

The trail will follow the walking/running path from the railroad tracks by Twin Lake up to the sacrificial table and replace the existing ski trail from the table to the north loop entry and out to Theo Wirth Parkway.

Tree removal will begin shortly once a final alignment is made. We should have a better timeframe then.

So does this mean we will not be able to ride the trails during the construction? Also, any idea how long the construction supposed to go on for?

Yep, the trails are closed during the construction period. It is considered a construction zone and they will ticket people for riding on this trail during this time. I'll let someone else ellaborate on length of time. I don't think anyone knows the time table.

Uh...all we know is...until it gets done. We are hoping late spring early summer. Ryan is correct......the trails are closed during construction.

Why is this you may ask? Because the Luce Line will be going through some existing trail and we can't have construction equipment and riders out there at the same time....much too dangerous!

MOCA has plans for some reroutes of the areas of trail that will be affected. What this means is that as soon as we get the chance, we will need to design, layout, and build new trail. In order for this to happen quickly so we can get back on the trails to ride.......we will be asking for all the volunteer support we can get. On top of this......we have the Section 6 (advanced section) project on hold until we have our main trail open for riding. It will be interesting times.......but no worries......the trusty MOCA crew will get it all figured out.....:)

I'm sure this has been brought up but will there be work on section 6 while waiting on the first section of trail to clear up?
Any sunday morning sessions planned? I actually may be able to make some and really would like to throw some dirt around. I can carve a good lip.

The situation will totally be fluid. Since we don't know when the what is........we just have to plan things as they come. But if trailwork season starts and we can't start working on reroutes.......we will likely first work on all the damage caused by riders who don't care about our trails and ride them wet....then work on 6.

So am I understanding this right? There will be construction during the riding season closing off parts of the trails. But, there will be trail reroutes built so people can still ride the trails?

And this is a little off subject, but what's a quick overview of some of the features to be added to section 6?

Theo will be closed for MTB riding during the construction. From what I understand, Three Rivers will be issuing tickets to those who choose to ride anyway.

The trail will be closed during construction because the Luce Line construction area will go through parts of the existing trail. Once the construction is completed, the Theo crew will be building reroutes to fix the areas on the trail that the Luce Line trail destroyed.

Thanks Ryan......that is exactly how it will go down. This is not MOCA closing the trail.....this is 3 Rivers in cooperation with the MPRB closing down the trails while construction is going on.

Looks like this will be a good time for people that ride Theo to try other trails.

That bums me out. I just moved to Fridley last October, and only live 10 miles from Theo. I was planning on riding it quite a bit this year. Guess I will just have to go back to my trusty crew over at Battle Creek until it is finished.

I'll keep an out for trail work days, and come out and lend a hand.

If your in Fridley, Elk river is not to far and is a pretty good trail to ride. I am sure they would appreciate any help they could get.

Oh, this is really too bad!
I'd rather ride to the trails than have to drive.

We are looking at Mid May at the earliest....maybe later for the North loop to be open. Can't open the trails until the Luce Line is done, even if they become dry. Again, the MPRB and Three Rivers will be enforcing this. We will be starting trailwork soon and focus on maintenance and the new reroutes that have to be made because of the Luce Line trail location. The more help we get during this time, the sooner the trails will open after the Luce Line is finished.

seconded.

Drive to trails?! Why on earth would anyone do that?! :eyeroll:

Is there a map showing the projected Luce Line additions going thru Theo anywhere? The verbal description given doesn't make sense (at least to me...).

just looking for my curiosity sake, and to be a Nudgenik...

Didn't they just de-forest all of the brownie stuff over by the Target building? or is that not the famed "brownie trail?"

I run the trails quite often, they have done some clearing back there, but construction seems to be moving along very slowly. I would be surprised if they are done before June. There have been a lot of people riding back there, judging from the number of ruts they have been leaving.

I think you're talking about the east side of the lake (closest to the parkway). The trail is on the other side of the lake. They have been clearing buckthorn in different park areas. Last year they did it at Brownie and on the Islands of Lake of the Isle.

Trails are not just closed for mountain bikers.....they are closed to all user groups. Running actually can do more damage than riding them. So please obey the fences that state the trail is closed.......yes.....even if you are on rollerblades....:banghead:

I've been trail running for years and entirely disagree with you! But in a friendly way! I would like to help with maintenance/rebuilding this year, maybe I will learn more from you.

While I do run the theo wirth trails nearly everyday, I'm not usually on the mtn bike trails... I don't want you think that I am out there purposely causing trouble.

They've given both Brownie and Cedar complete Brazilians. Looking at Brownie from the lakeside trail makes it look deceptively easy - until you ride it... Brownie was pretty eroded and had some deadfall in spots...but that's Brownie.
