I bent my large chain ring the other night, so I figured if I have to replace 1 I might as well replace all 3 since they are 4 years old. Anyone have a good set to recommend?

How often are you using your big ring? I decided not enough to warrant having one on any of my mountain bikes so I now i have a bash guard instead.

+1 on Black Spire. Little cheaper than Race Face and alot cheaper then Shimano.

Bash guard is a good idea as well. Large ring is not needed unless you ride on the road too much.

I was thinking about doing the same. :)

Yep, go with a bash guard. Find out what your BCD is and you can go get one off eBay for around $20 - look for "race face bash guard". I just sold my old one last week......

Really not all that often except for when riding the River Bottoms. Oddly enough, that is where I bent it. :banghead: A bash guard may not be a bad idea.

Speaking of chain rings....I'm in need of new chain rings for my Shimano XT (holotech) Will the Salsa or Blackspire work with my Older XT cranks?
+2 on blackspire rings. Plus a BG for the big.
Dan - just make sure to measure and get the correct BCD.

I have a complete set of barely used Race Face 9spd/4-bolt/104bcd rings in silver (22/32/42) that I'd part with for a very reasonable price.

If you only need to replace your outboard chainring, you already have a bashguard.

Ok, I've found a set of new RaceFace rings for $75. My current and very stretched chain is a SRAM PC55. What a good replacement?

+1 on the bashguard. +1 for red.
-1 for how heavy those e.thirteen bashguards are. Only get them for freeride or DH......XC riders will be much happier with a lighter weight bashring.

For those that run a bash guard instead of a 3rd chain ring, what size middle ring do you use?
Did you shorten your chain?

I ran a 26/36 bash on my 575 going to run 24/38 bash when I can find the blackspire models in stock.

I just use the stock 32t ring. If 32/11 has me spinning out, I'm taking the opportunity to enjoy some coasting.
Yes, I go with a shorter chain. Big (now middle) ring front, big ring back. Pull it as tight as it goes, then add about 3 links.

Or need more then an 11-21 cassette.

e.13 Supercharger = 144g*
Raceface = 145g*
Huh? I own both.
*depending on the website blah blah blah....if you really care I can weigh both on my gram scale when I get home, either way it isn't like you are adding a half pound on a bike....

Or any gears at all.

On topic, I treat my big ring as a bashgaurd and see no reason to switch to an actual BG as I use it often and don't have any issues of the ring meeting my body.

minus 1 for the e.13. Plastic = brittle.
I dismantled one of them last year riding Grand Junction. Granted, it was probably from John's novel route, where several times we had to throw our bikes over a ridge then climb it on all fours. I wouldn't doubt that it broke while landing sideways on a rock, but the RaceFace or Salsa guards would have not done that.

I have wondered about it hitting in a funky way in breaking, where did it snap? I know they have specific torque specs.... Both my raceface and e.13 have taking a beating so far and both have held up really well.

The edge broke off between two of the bolts. It looks like it happened while flopping it onto a rock.
It is possible that the bolts were too tight. I usually use a torque wrench when working from home, but repairs and maintenance that I do while at my cabin (much of it) is done with toolbox stuff. Same thing with repairs done while on a ride. (In Fruita, I rebuilt about half of my bike and laced a wheel from the hotel room.)
Still, something as simple as overtightening a bolt should not cause a catastrophic failure. RaceFace and Salsa don't have a problem with that.

Gotcha, was just curious where it broke. As much as I like the e.13 I don't like too fussy of a part since I don't carry a torque wrench in the car or on the trail.

144 grams vs 44 grams for a Salsa ring guard. Not sure what my Truvativ SS one weighs, but I am sure it's in the ballpark of the Salsa one.
And yes they hold up just fine. I smash mine on rocks all the time and have yet to bend one.

I haven't run the salsa one but it sure looks thin, I am sure it holds up well enough. For 100 grams difference I think I will take the RF for bash-ability.

Salsa also makes a manly bash guard for us over-achievers. If you're going to use a bash guard, you may as well make it worth your while.

1/4 pound here.....1/4 pound there.....next thing you know your XC Steed weighs 35 pounds.
Which is why I said in my original post the XC Riders might want something lighter.......:p

No thanks, sea foam is not turquoise.
Plus I would rather ride in my big ring, not that you would know anything about how to do that.

That's 36, depending on which wheels I'm running.
But some of us aren't weight weenies who are are too weak to carry around a few gears or plastic valve caps.

My monkey is light and had a "heavy" bashguard. Now my XC/AM ride is a bit north of 30...

I am not much of a weight wennie, but I don't see adding unnecessary weight. Those bolts on the e.thirteen's are heavy steel crappy ones......like the old skool BMX freestyle bashguards. The plastic is even heavy compared to an equally strong and lighter aluminum one. Overkill on a bashguard is not needed by most XC riders.........downhill, freeriders, and maybe some All-Mountain style riding might need them, but that's about it.
It's totally rider choice.....but I am just throwing other options and opinions out there. No reason to debate it.

Blackspire.
except if they are for XTR ....you know the ones....****mano made the bolt pattern non standard...... and used softer material for the rings.....and charge an outragous amount for them......yeah those ones. First generation xtr for outboard bearings.
4 years ago was still the one.
XTR rings shift much better than the Blackspire ( ramping ) but do not last.

Bolts on the bash guard should be steel......light weight or not...they dont need to be Heavy crappy ones though, but steel.
