after nearly veering off several curves at Lebanon Hills yesterday, it has become apparent that the front tire on my stock '07 Stumpjumper hardtail isn't really cutting it. it is now time to upgrade my front tire to something that can keep me on the trail better.
any recommendations?

John,
Welcome to MORC. If you do a search on tires, you'll come up with tons of threads that have tons of recomendations for tire set-ups. The info is plentyfull. Good luck, man!

Specialized Captains or Fast Trak controls, had good luck on fast tracks, captains were a recommendation of a friend who works at a shop. I'm looking at new tires too, don't know if i want to change or stay with what works.
Good hunting.

S works captn's work great or some smalll block 8's work great. What ever, play with tire psi a bit....makes a difference.

Until we get some rain, the trails will be very dry with a layer of dust on top. I'm not sure that anything is going to give excellent grip in these conditions.
The Leb crew is using smaller knobs, such as Smallblock 8, Nobby Nic, and Racing Ralph. They hook up reasonably well, and roll fast.

+ another.
Nothing's gonna stick when the edge of the trail crumbles beneath your tread. That said, it seems the "little and many" knob theme does OK.

I have great luck with the WTB weirwolfs. I didnt care for the fast trak's, they seemed to washout a lot for me.

I agree with the person who said fast track controls and the captains are both good tires. I've got the captains on my stumpy, they are nice but I had to replace my rear tire on my enduro and got the fasttrack control and it rips. The fasttrack is my favorite tire, it works wonders on places like Leb and Murphy. When my captains wear down I will replace them with a pair of Specialized Fasttrack Controls.

letting a little air out of your tire works too.

Good point. Good AIR PRESSURE baseline is 32 psi +/- 5 psi.
Higher pressure does not mean faster due to decreased traction caused by reduced surface area in the right areas. One of the Farm crew guys recently posted an article about how tire pressure and tire width affect power usage.
Doesn't your Stumpy come with fasttracks? The squirming some people felt on them could be due to the fact that the old ones had knobs that were very tall, not good on hardpack. Look for the LK(low knob) designation. The Captain is more of a loose condition tire, normally Leb is definite hardpack, but with the dry weather it is getting looser and looser.
