I am looking for a bike that can work as a good commuter in the fall/winter/spring months. I would like to be able to perhaps ride trails on the bike as well. Currently all my bikes are road bikes and I drive my car in the winter, but would like to switch to year-round biking. I would like something good, but nothing bank breaking. TIA! Christian

Surly Cross Check. There are about 800 of us with them on here. :D

Get a cheaper mountain bike, with fenders, and expect to have to replace the entire drive train after commuting in the winter. Singlespeed is good because the parts are cheaper to replace.

Best place to shop?

The Hub Bike Co-Op (the Cedar location... in the same building as Midwest Mountaineering).

As long as they aren't backordered at Q, they should have every size available for a test ride.

Not to argue against getting a Cross Check, but IMO this is also really good advice:
