I've been looking to upgrade from my Niner EMD and my wonderful wife recently approved the purchase of the frame pictured below.

2766

This will likely be the only frame I purchase for a couple of years so I'm soliciting advice.

I've looked around but I'm eager to know if you can recommend any 29'er FS frames that would be a better choice.

How much money are you willing to spend? Is that a RIP?

Yep - RIP.

Money is only an issue once we get into the Moots price range. I'm looking forward to an overall upgrade - not just the frame.

Yeah I hear you there. My MootoX YBB will be with me a long time. I hear really good things about the Niner JET as well. I guess it depends on how much travel you want.

I don't know about other 29er frames, but I demoed a RIP 9 tonight and I loved it. Can't wait to get one for myself.

Also, consider a Ventana El Ray or a Turner Sultan.

Also worth checking into the brand new Salsa FS 29er. Very interesting

Hopefully they do, I'd like to take them for a spin also.

It's a difficult choice between the RIP9, Sultan, and the El Ray. I think the Sultan and the RIP9 are roughly equivalent in performance. I'm looking into the El Ray.

The Salsa is interesting but not available for some time and unproven.

I'm still leaning RIP9. I think it's the least attractive (pretty) of the three but I love my EMD and it's a low end Niner.

Has anyone has ridden the RIP9, Sultan, and the El Ray or know of a comprehensive comparison somewhere.

I'm an impulsive guy and would like to at least pretend that I gave this some serious thought.

Check out the 29er shootout on MTBR.com

There is some information there. Salsa 29er at 24 hours Afton? Sounds like you are a go Tom. I will be bringing the bike tomorrow, we can trade off if you would like to ride.

Very nice offer. I won't try anything fast or fancy.... so I probably won't break anything. You know my user name is surprisingly descriptive.

I bit it today. If you ride my bike there may be some ghost shifting.

EGO EDIT: sub 47 min lap, even with two crashes.

Any details on this one? Day? Time?

I am planning on buying a better bike and I think it might be a 29er after riding one at Theo last night. I am so hooked.

Quite a few of us will be out there, if you have time, test ride and volunteer for a timing shift! :)

Maybe I just can't find it... but I'm seeing no indication of the big mama at Afton. Where can I find the big mama demo details?

Salsa is going to be out there, they will have bikes from what I have heard including the big mama. I could be wrong, but give pman@salsacycles.com a shout and see what they are thinking.

Are the demos all weekend? Either the web site doesn't really say or I am just illiterate. I know we will be out of town most of the weekend, but I might have to sneak out there early Saturday. If I can make it, you will probably be able to twist my arm into staying for a shift.

I emailed Salsa and they confirmed that there will be a demo Big Mama available during the race.

Not sure what your size is Tom, but every Clyesdale's that has purchased RIP 9 just loves it. It's to bad you didn't hit the demo Tuesday night. I rode the XL RIP and just fell in love with it. It is my next bike.

Not sorry, but the RIP is way too spindly for any true clyde. Step into Erik's SLP and look at one yourself. They look pretty but the highly manipulated puny parts are prone to perish over time under load (and have).

Look at a Ventana, Turner or Lenz if you're a clyde serious about FS 29er.

My Lenz Behemoth is always available for test rides.

Anyone hear anything good/bad about the Intense model 29ers? Looks like they have a 5.5 version coming out (or already out) as well.

That Intense looks pretty sweet. What about Titus?

You could always find a great used Moots 29er for under $2K. :)

Thanks guys. I'll be thinking it over, in a tent, for the next few days. I plan to place the order, when I return.

Funny that the 29 version is coming out and the 26 version is being replaced.

I think Intense bikes are really overpriced. Most reviews I have read on the Intense are that is a fast bike to ride....but not necessarily fun. I am looking for a fun to ride twenty niner, not some over price weight weenie special.
