Hey, I am thinking about getting a bike to get out of the house more. i have rode bikes before(i think prety obvious). but never been on a trail.
being that my last bike was a pos cheap thing that i didnt ride cuz the tires never held air i sold it. i am looking to buy a new one. for reasonably cheap. i was looking at http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3136545. its aroudn $350 which is about all im able to spend atm. any tips or suggestions on other bikes would be gladdly appreciated.

In my opinion, someone new to riding doesn't need to be overly concerned with which bike they choose to buy, especially when dealing with a very limited budget. It's best to just get a bike from somewhere you are comfortable with, and within your price range. Once you start to ride you will figure out what you don't like about your current ride, and what you do like. If you stick with it long enough, you will eventually feel the need to upgrade to a better (more expensive) bike for your riding. By that time biking will have become more of a priority in your lifestyle, and you'll more easily be able to justify spending more dough.
Just be careful not to get too addicted like the rest of us. Soon, you too will be selling your plasma to get that new set of wheels... :)

For newbs, I also recommend that they buy from a local store, not the internet. That way (hopefully) someone will be able to explain a few basic things to you as well as answer any questions you may have.

lol. well i just dont want to shell out 350 on a bike that is the same quality as a bike i can get for half that. and i hope you joking about the plasma. i would have more money to spend but i just bought a harley so my budget is rather limited atm. and yes i would go into the dicks sporitn goods or erics that is by my house. i am just looking around on the web first.

Sounds like you're on the right track, I just don't have enough experience with that price range to recommend anything.
Don't forget to check the Classifieds here (http://www.morcmtb.org/classifieds/showcat.php?cat=2). Sometimes you can get a great deal on something slightly used.

I'm into my second season with a K2 Crush which is the exact same as a Attack 1.0 which REI used to sell ($650 at REI, $425 for the Crush at Sports Authority). I changed the front spring ($20) to the stiffest available and it has worked good for me. The main thing is being able to adjust so you dont bottom out and most bikes in this price or less you will bottom out if riding anything rough. I'm going to upgrade next year but i ride alot at Lebanon otherwise this bike would be good for years of moderate trail riding. Get out and have fun!!
