View Full Version : Baking disc brake pads?

I got a very small amount of mineral oil on my new brakes when I installed them today. They squeal now as I expected.

I've heard baking them in the oven for a bit can take care of this. Anybody know if this is true?

clean with isopropyl alcohol...that's what I did to clean my rotors. Not sure on baking.

Throw mud on the calipers and make a couple progressive, high speed stops. Seriously. This works better than baking, burning, rubbing with alcohol or any other squeal voodoo known to man.

Replace the pads. No other vodoo will remove the oil from the pad material.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. But thought it can't hurt to bake them and try to save them.

You could torch them, that would burn off the oil. Putting them in with red hot charcoal for 5 minutes would do it too.

A oven wouldn't get hot enough to burn off the oil.

Vapor pressure of Mineral oil is pretty high to bake it off?

As directed below - I'd clean'em with IPA, dry'em, and then ride'em. if that doesn't fix it - just go buy some new ones!

I repeat. Mud + calipers + long, progressive braking. It works EVERY time and nothing catches on fire.
