So just bought a pair and not sure what I am supposed to wear underneath them. Boxers seem like they will bunch up. Not a big fan of briefs and commando just seems wrong. So do I go with the hybrid boxer-brief?
I'm sure this has been asked by many a newb but I could'nt find anything when I searched.
Thanks

If ever there was a topic for a mens only forum... :p
There are two types of people in this world. Those who go comando, and those who wear Boxer Briefs under their padded shorts. Regular briefs might be ok.
Anything smaller than a brief (anywhere, not just under padded shorts) is cause for heckling and much laughter... unless that person has been featured in Playgirl... and even then... ;)

I wear the Hybrid Undies, but they gotta be synthetic to breath.
I have also stopped using the big padded diaper that comes with most shorts, I find that I just don't need or like the extra bulk. I've started looking for shorts without them.

your right, boxers bunch and briefs are almost as bad, that leaves only one option... sorry... :banghead:
I'm a boxer brief guy 9-5 but when it comes to riding, I'm pure commando. I didn't like the idea, at first but after my first commando ride, there was no turning back.

Nothing but skin under padded bike shorts. Besides, panty lines aren't in vogue.

Cycling shorts are designed to be worn with nothing under them. If you do they will not properly wick away moisture, and you also will get material bunching up creating ridges that will dig into your skin. Go naked or go home! It feels awesome :)

At first it feels odd going bare under you padded shorts, but then you think about how much money you're saving because that's one more garment you don't have to wash...:D
Actually, I can't even imagine wearing something under my shorts. That would be very uncomfortable to me.
It's even better to be cheap like me and wear the same shorts for 5+ years...yeah, I wash them often. +1 for Pearl Izumi clothing.

Thanks yall! I was a bit tender after my first ride on my new-to-me-bike after only 10 miles so desided I should invest in some padding. I went out and bought clipless shoes, a helmet and the shorts today. I forgot to ask the cute girl that was helping me what I should be rockin under 'em.
I posted this when I got home waited a bit and didnt get any responses so figured I had hit a sensitive subject and made an executive decision. I went with the boxer-brief. Without getting to descriptive, it worked out fine but I only had cotton so I will get a set of the synthetic one and check em out. Then commando
I am a boxer buy all day everyday. Nothing fancy just good old cotton boxers. When I tried the shorts on I had flash backs to when I was 4 and tighty whities were all I knew. This will take some getting used to.
Thanks again guys

Well that, and a layer of Butt Butter or Chamois Cream. If you going to be in the saddle for a long time or going to really sweat up a storm it's the difference between being comfy and a bad case of monkey butt:embarass:

Yeah the commando is the way to go! It's especially nice if you use the Pearl Izumi Microsensor. a little more spendy but damn is there a huge difference between the ultrasensor and microsensor.
The only time I've worn anything underneath my shorts was when I was going 100+ miles. Sometimes doubling up makes for a much more comfy and less abrasive ride!
One other Recommendation is to use Assos or similar product as per directions to "lube" and numb the nethers for long distance riding stuff 30+. You'll definitley enjoy it!
I can't believe I just posted that!

I still can't get myself to put anything resembling lube anywhere near the nether regions...

commando and Pearl Izumi. I am also trying the LGs. They seem to work well also.
I ride the PI microsensor...
I saw this the other day, awesome name, the website is great too. The women's t-shirt is great.

"Finally!
NEVER... NEVER... NEVER...
Wear Underwear Under Your Bike Short!
The materials used in pads today are designed to wick moisture, breath and prevent the propagation of bacteria. As such, they are more sanitary than your underwear. The whole purpose of the bike pad is to prevent chafing. In order to work, the short must fit your body like a second skin. Having a layer of clothing between your body and your bike short will prevent the short from working the way that it should, and will increase your chances of experiencing chafing and sores where the underwear sits against your body."

I talked to a buddy that races the other day and asked him. He said commando, and in regards to lube I hear that just a couple swipes of deoderant works well.
I am still not ready to rock just the shorts but I am working on it. Maybe tomorrow... or next month.
Thanks for all the input!

Here is what I have learned works:
1. Nice clean junk down there to start.
2. Air dry.
3. A little baby powder.
4. Sans drawers.
Works for me.

A good pair of bike shorts is critical on a long ride. On an mtb you can maybe get away with regular underwear or whatevber. If you ride on the road, where you sit for a long period of time and spin, you want the right stuff shielding your nether regions.
I highly recommend Assos cream too. Yes its a funny name, those crazy Swiss...The other stuff is inferior, at least in my experience. After the first true saddle sore you get, you will gladly pay $20 for a jar of the stuff.

Your non-cycling friends are not going to 'see' the saddle in this logo and will think this stuff is for lubing something else.

Good point. Also the phrase "high viscosity chamois cream" would probably be lost on them. They might think a chamois is some type of small furry gerbil like creature.
