Picked up some Cutter Max 100% DEET bug dope yesterday. I'll post if it works. If you read about a mysterious poisoning victim found at Murphy this weekend, it'll probably be me.

That stuff works well for mosquitoes but only so-so for black flies, and not at all for ticks.
We used to use 100% DEET bug repellents a lot for canoe trips. My wife is now allergic to it. Even just a little bit on part of her skin, and she breaks out all over. I only use it when the bugs are bad. Even then, I try to put it on my clothes rather than on my skin.
Anyway, don't overdo it spraying yourself down.

I was up in the boundary waters last weekend with lots of DEET. We had a 40% deet cream - another couple had a 100% spray identical or very similar to this. They were significantly less bug consumed than we were. Interestingly in a 1 hour walk in Leb here I've gotten 8-10 ticks, up north slathered in DEET I picked up 1 tick in 4 days.

the 100% deet works well that is usually what i use it keeps the ticks away.. but i think 100% deet makes the shells on baby bird eggs weak so the baby bird dies (that is what i heard somewere not shure if it is true)

I prefer a DEET alternative that's proven to work - http://www.rei.com/product/703338
I used it at the River Bottoms, with good results. It also doesn't melt lycra, if I remember correctly.

Jim, REI's brand Ultra 30 works great too. It has some sort of chemical that keeps the repellant on the surface of your skin thus making it more effective. I've used & I recommend!

If you read the accounts of the search we (Backcountry, MORC and Barmy Dogs patrollers) were on a few weeks ago, we were plagued with mosquitos and ticks. For the ticks, (after Alden, wearing shorts, found over 20 wood and deer ticks on his legs during the lunch break) everybody wore long pants tucked into socks/gaiters (mara even had cute little skulls on her gaiters) and saturated the cuffs with 3M Ultrathion We also used either Cutters, Deepwoods Off or Natrapel for other parts of our bodies.
I use Natrapel-Ultra when I can find it, or their new Natrapel 8-Hour, on all exposed skin. It has no DEET, is all natural, and works with my body chemistry. Unfortunately, it does not do so for everyone. The DNR has started supplying us with a new Sawyer DEET-free product that seems to be working very well. However, it is not on store shelves yet.
Ultrathion is formulated so very little DEET is actually absorbed by the skin, but as we found with the ticks in Grantsburg, it is very effective.
NOTHING works on deer flies, and they draft very well.
Ride safe,

I don't use bug spray very often. For some reason I don't get bit much. During trailwork last Wednesday everyone was putting on bug spray......I didn't use any. I got about 3 bites total.
But sometimes I do use bug spray. I try to avoid DEET, I have not heard anything good about it. Ticks.....no biggie. I just make sure I am checking often and at night I do a full body check.
For certain instances it is a good idea to wear long pants and shirt. This is where the high tech stuff comes in handy.......just so you don't get too hot.

I had really good luck with Liquid Net a couple of weeks ago camping in Interstate State Park. The mosquitoes are really bad this year up there. DEET free.

It was purchased at Joe's sporting goods.

If you are looking for tick repllant sawyer works well, but it only goes on clothing, and it also needs to dry first.

First, it's 3m Ultrathon, not Ultrathion.
Like Shad, I don't get bit often. I also don't itch much from skeeter bites. I do take 300 mgs of garlic a day, which is supposed to help some people. It does seem to work with the gnats. Everyone I work with at Sand Dunes is always complaining about them, but they don't seem to bother me much.
