For thoose of you who don't know about the Mega Tour pleas see # below for more info.

Its a little early, but I thought I would start planning a little earlier this year because there arent many dates open to do the Mega Tour this year. I also want to give people plenty of time to plan for the pain.

Sep 6 Gnome Fest
Sep 13 Chequamegon Fat Tire Fest
Sep 20 New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride next day
Sep 27 *
Oct 4 *
Oct 11 MORC Summit
Oct 18 *
Oct 25 *
Nov 1 ??? Halloween ride night before ???

I would like to do it on Sep. 27 or Oct. 4 to give us a few minutes more day light. I want to try and keep the same schedule of trails as last year.

# The Mega Tour is fun day of riding every trail in the "metro" that is open for rididng. Last year that was, Battle Creek-Salem Hills-Lebanon Hills-Murphy Hanrehan-River Bottoms-Theodore Wirth, and we did them in that order. We had 21 riders start, others joined and left at other trail, and finished with 5 at Theo. We did almost 50 miles of trail riding. You can join us or leave us at any trail you want, you dont have to do the whole thing.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

If it's the 27th I think I'd be in for at least some of the trails.

I can understand not making the trip out to Hillside, but not Terrace? It's right on the way from Leb to Murphy.

I like the idea although I maybe be going home one of those weekends for a Nebraska football game.

If i'm around when it's scheduled i'd probably attend...no partying the night before either!

If I remember right, Terrace will be closed for the season by then. Thats why its not on the list.

I should be in. I was exhausted after last year's event. Even after driving to each trail. And to think that we were going to try riding the WHOLE time.

It was fun, though! I got my fourth wind on Theo. I thought we had a nice little pace going but then again, i'm not exactly Speed Racer!

It's a little far out but I'll go ahead and commit. If I'm still in MN, I'll be there - start to finish, as long as there is not too much driving.

I'll start with the fast group - move to the slow group - then back to the exhausted, riding too fast, and crashing often group.

Or if there is only one moderate/slow group, all the better and less painful.

For the most part this is not a hammer fest.

You can also join or leave at any trail. When it gets closer to time I will post up a contact info. I am even thinking about getting a volunteer to do parking lot duty to let peole know when and where we are.

Last year we also had a lunch break after Leb. Hills.

I am also consideing an earlier than 8am start. I would like to have a little more daylight towards the end of the ride.

I have been looking over the thread from last year and here is what I have come up with.

This is the order of the ride with trail length and average lap times as posted in the trail guide.

Battle Creek 7-10 miles/25-50 minutes (8:00am start 30 minutes earlier from last year)

Salem Hills 4.3 miles

Lebanon Hills 9.5 miles (not sure if this includes new section)

LUNCH 0.0 miles/30-60 minutes

Murphy Hanrehan 10 miles/45-90 minutes

River Bottoms 11 miles one way/45-90 minutes (last year only rode to 9 mile creek and back)

Theodore Wirth 4.3 miles/20-40 minutes (hopefully before dark but bring lights anyway)

I was trying to come up with a time frame that we might be at each trail. I thought a good number to go with was 1 1/2 -2 hours per trail. This includes travel to each trail. This is just an estimate.

1 1/2 hours Trail 2 hours
8:00 Bat. Crk. 8:00
9:30 Salem 10:00
11:00 Lebanon 12:00
12:30 Lunch 2:00
2:00 Murph 3:00
3:30 Riv. Bot. 5:00
5:00 Theo Wirth 7:00
6:30 Finished 9:00

I will post more later.

Please post up (even if you have before) if you plan to ride with us. Please let me know what trail you plan to meet the group at. I am going to have a list of names at each trail, so that no one gets left behind or misses the ride.

We will start the ride at 8:00 from the Battle Creek Rec. Center lot. The Rec. Center is not open on the weekends so you will not be able to change in there. There will be no restroom avalible.

A lunch stop is planned for after Lebanon Hills. There are a few places to eat close to Leb. Some are shown on the map http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=107057605110033128219.0004594cab0a07b66803a&ll=44.892364,-93.245773&spn=0.23787,0.439453&t=h&z=11.

If you need to find us on the day of the ride, you can call me at 651, 434, 7130. I will have the phone with me the whole ride.

Looks like the River Bottoms section just east of Lyndale is going to still be closed during the Mega Ride. SInce the area between the raft and lyndale is mostly dirt road, it might make sense to just ride to/from the raft like we did last year.

(I still don't know if I'll be in town to do the ride. Doubtful.)

That was the plan. Just to ride from the Bloomington Ferry side to the raft and back.

Thanks for reminding me about that.

All times are estimates, acctual time WILL vary.
1 1/2 hours Trail 2 hours
8:00 Bat. Crk. 8:00

2:00 Murph 3:00

Terrace Oaks usually closes in late October. Hillside would be an awesome addition, but the distance from the other trails makes it difficult to add. The original intention of the Megaride was to literally ride to/on all of the trails listed, instead of driving. I think that someone should organize the same type of ride, but with the trails North of the metro (Hillside, Jail Trail, Milaca, etc.)

Mini mara hijack: I think it would be a great idea to hit Milaca, Monticello, Jail Trail and Hillside (although I'm not sure I could survive Hilliside when tired; I can barely make it through as it is) in one day. We could combine it with our annual "orange vest" ride. I vote for any Saturday after November 1, since earlier would conflict with pre-established MORCey rides.

Unhijack: I can't wait for the mega ride! Shad and I are planning to ride the whole thing although now that I've postied publicly that I plan on making a ride, an asteroid will probably fall out of the sky early Saturday morning, squish my bike, and prevent me from making it ;)

Please post up if you plan to ride with us.

Non of these trails like people on them until they are dry. Have to wait until someone has checked to trails to see if this is on. Seems unlikely, giving the rain we had last night, and now trails taking 24-36 hours to dry with cooler temps. Keep your fingers crossed!

There is a 60% chance of rain overnight. We are hitting a lot of trails tomorrow and I know Theo will be very borderline tomorrow and certainly a no-go if it rains at all overnight.

So let's hope for no rain and good reports from the other trails on this ride.

I just got word about Theo trail conditions and it is currently too wet to ride, but if no rain might be good by tomorrow.

My fear is that Theo is one of the fastest drying trails in the metro. I know Battle Creek, Leb, and maybe even Murphy take a bit longer to dry out.

So someone needs to make a call, but it's not looking too good at this point......:cryin:

I stopped by BC on my way home. It is border line ridable right now. Any rain is going to be a problem. I'm wondering about Murphy and Leb even if it doesn't rain tonight? Any input from the Murphy or Leb Stewards?

BTW, BC dries very fast as a whole. Very good drainage and all the pesky sand.

Sorry everyone I just got back in to town.

I drove by Leb this evening and it was open but only a couple cars there ????

The National Weather Service is saying a 60% chance for 0.12 inches of rain.

I have checked the trail conditions page and it looks like if it doesn't rain tonight we should be ok.

We can proced with caution and check the trails before we ride them.

I will post-up before I leave in the morning to post any last minute changes.

The rain in western Minnesota is moving south. The rain between Hayward WI. and St Cloud is headed west, with a little move to the south west. It is moving in a counter clockwise motion around the low pressure thats sitting almost on top of us. This low will move to the east over night. Thats why there is a 60% chance of rain.

With that said I dont want to cancel at this time I will keep an I on the radar over night.

Not sure what service you r using but I use a pretty reliable one. I am looking at the entire midwest and there is rain in the dakota's, duluth, madison, etc. All of it is moving directly east with a slight northern push to it. Nothing is moving west and at this point it looks like cell in the dakotas will hit us but the intense part of the cell may miss us unless it turns north more between now and then. Unfortunately the cell appears large enough to soak the trails which we all know all already borderline. Still hoping to ride but it doesnt look good

CANCELLED

After watching the radar and knowing how far some people have to drive, I think its best to cacel the ride.

I have however come up with a "paved" ride of 20 miles. It is the Gateway trail. We would start at Lake Phalen and ride 10 miles out then come back. There are a few places off the trail to have lunch/take break at. This trail goes through a veriety of urban, suburban and forested areas.

We would be meet by car at road crossings along the way to make sure every one is doing ok.

We would start at about noon and be done before dark.

Here is a map of the route http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=45.062495,-92.926311&spn=0.003835,0.009613&t=h&z=17&msid=107057605110033128219.00045a0b4918a2d94a66d

I would be up for that. I just went out & checked no rain in Farmington. say a Leb, M/H, Theo ride

My grass in Woodbury is still wet. With all of the leaf litter on the trails, I would assume that they will be wet as well. I think that Travis did the right thing in cancelling. I am out for the road ride. There is always the backup date for the Mega Ride.

Probably a good call. Without solid info on trail conditions, it's really tough to know if they are dry. Do we have a backup date? Travis?

I made the call to cancel this based on radar showing rain moving in.

The make-up date is Nov. 8th.

I will wait till around 10:00am to see if there is enough intrest in the road ride. would like to have around 10 or more to ride.

I'd say even if you don't hit your 10 people minimum, do the ride. Even with 5 it would be fun. I say that knowing I can't ride and wishing I could. Hope you guys hit the road!

All I know is that I want to ride my bike today. I'll ride laps around my house if I have to :)

But really, I'm down for whatever we can do. I'm still in for the road ride, but if that doesn't pan out, I would be interested in any group ride, on just one trail or as many as are ridable.

COME ON NOVEMBER 8TH! Maybe I can hit the whole thing that day.

I know how you feel. mara and I will probably hit the road today. 20 miles is a bit short, my work commute is more than that.....;)

Might want to do chores and such on 2 wheels today, we'll see.

Let's hope we have good weather on Nov 8th!!

Anyone wanna ride Leb and maybe another starting around 10 am today?

If it's open, of course!

Nov. 8 is the yearly MORC Board planning meeting so the board is out... but maybe late afternoon people can tag in on the ride somewhere.

I would be in for that. But could we make it a little later? Like noon? I've already opted in for the road ride and I'm going to wait to see if that is going to happen.

Travis - How long are you going to wait until you decide whether we are doing the road ride?

Okay. Let's try for a group ride at 11:00 or 12:00 at Lebanon Hills, or whatever trail is dry enough and open!

John Lundell just reminded me that the MORC Strategic Planning Meeting is on the 8th. Any chance the Mega Ride II can be a different date?

I am going to take a walk around the BC trails. If they are dry I would be interested in a ride around 11-12-1. Most of BC dries quickly, my only concern is the great new luge trail as it is not packed down that well.
I will post back when I return.

There's a football game I want to watch at 11:30 but I s'pose I could ride Leb at 11.

Anyone for Leb at 11?

So. It looks like we have 3 (maybe 4) people for Lebanon Hills at 11am. Now if only we could get official word if the trails are dry enough....

I'm willing to chance it even if we don't get a trail update. I'll be leaving my place, around 10:20 and be in the lot by 10:40. If it's too wet to ride, we can go to Old Chicago for lunch or something (or just go home and cry :cryin:).

This is the latest post for the Lebanon Hills trail conditions by Gopherhockey:

Best guess is it will be soft but probably not trail damaging if ridden lightly. If someone goes out and gives it a try please post up.

I just walked around BC and it is in pretty good shape. 2 riders came down the luge trail and barely left a tread mark. I will be going out at 1 if anyone is interested.

What about having the Mega Ride next saturday and the last ride is the Murphy Night Ride (incorporating the two events)? I know it's a little more out of the way but I think it'd be a great cap to an awesome ride.
