I was riding at BC last weekend, and the bottom bracket on my bike decided to disassemble itself about a mile in to the ride. The bike is an old pile, and I do not want to sink more than it is worth in to it (which would only take about $100) by bringing it in to a shop. Particularly when I am planning on getting a new bike next season.

Would somebody be willing to take a look at it and see if it can be repaired w/o buying replacement parts? And since I know absolutely nothing about wrenching, possibly helping me fix it if possible? I can pay with ample supply of the brew of your choice.

Can you post a pic. so one might know what tools would be needed.

I'll get one when I get home.

Sorry, but I laughed when I first read this as the mental picture of a BB falling apart in the middle ride is funny.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened to me...

If it's an old bike perhaps the lock-ring-thingy unthreaded itself from the shell.

Did you keep the parts that fell out?

Yup, I have all the parts. It was kind of funny when it happened. I was going up the big switchbacks, just about to the top when the all of a sudden, it was really easy to pedal. Legs went from barely moving to going a hundred miles an hour.....of course, all forward momentum stopped real fast.

A little more description would help until you get a chance to post the picture. Are the crank arms still attached to the spindle? You say your legs were spinning one hundred... is that from your chain coming off as the bottom bracket fell out?

Bring it out to the BC ride on Wed. PM early and we can take a look at it. I am assuming it is Shimano.

It is Shimano and I will bring it to BC. Crank arms are still attached, the chain rings spin free. There are a couple other (I don't know the part names, but they look like washers with threading on them) inside the chainrings.

I'll bring it to BC.

sounds more like the chainring bolts ran like cockroaches when the light comes on. The males ran off and left the females with the rings.
