Do you guys know of any place that sells 1/2" SPD pedals or the 9/16" to 1/2" adaptors. I want to get them for a 1979 Schwinn Collegiate sport that I am using as my commuter bike.

You'd do better to put 3 piece cranks on it with either an American to Euro adapter or a bottom bracket sized for American. (I'm pretty sure the bike has one piece cranks and an American BB.) There are 9/16" to 1/2" adapters, but they will put your pedals pretty far out from the frame, which could lead to physical problems with your body.

You are wright. I contemplated the effects that adding adapters would have on my knees. Do they even make SPDs with 1/2" thread? Changing the entire crack sounds like a lot of work.

Maybe look into BMX pedals. I've seen BMX riders use clipless platforms, and I assume they were 1/2" thread...

I doubt they make SPDs in 1/2", even for BMX applications. Most riders running clipless would also be running 3 piece cranks.

Most if not all of them are platforms. But you might be wright, maybe they make some special order clipless for BMX. I have alway use platforms for BMX.

Man, it sounds simple enough but I guess I am going to be happy by just getting cages for the original padels.

The adapters aren't cheap but if you really wanna rock some clipless pedals on those cranks they are probably your only option.

I retract my assumption concerning 1/2" clipless BMX pedals.
I did some digging and couldn't find a thing...not even on SheldonBrown!

You would be better off trading that bike in on a different bike with 9/16" cranks, the 79 collegiate is cool, but not cool enough to spend $100 changing out the cranks and BB.

Explore the drill and tap ...cheap way to not use adaptors and change the Q factor.
Machine shop or such can simpley drill the hole then retap it to the correct size for you. Just make sure they tap the left side backwards as needs to be.

That works if your going from 1/2 to 9/16, but not the other way... unless your planning on welding up the hole or something.
