So Im currently running a 33 up front and was thinking of having the option of doing 1x9 from time to time. Should I go with a short cage rear derailleur? Also, I need a hanger, will any do, or do I need to get one that fits just for the Raleigh? DaveTv

Blasphemy sblasphemy,
1 x 9 is where it's at.
what crankset are you running?
hollowtech II is what's up, then the e.13 lg 1 guide for the XXIX.
the e-type hanger sandwiched by the hollowtech cups= security
you will never look back to days of 2 or 3 rings up front.
As for your derail;
if you run your 33 tooth ring up front & a 1?-34 cassette- get the shorter (gs).
Sgs have longer cages designed to accommodate 44 tooth rings.
you could even consider running a road cassette 12-27 and use a shorter cage shimano road derailler (ss)
Your 33 t ring is just right for 1 x 9.
the hangar you're going to have to get through a raliegh dealer or online

You need to get a derailleur hanger from Raleigh that's made to fit the frame. A short cage rear mech will be just fine with a 1x9 setup.

What about trying a Shimano Alfine internal 8 speed?

so, if lets say I go with a short cage ultegra, would I have issues with chain width? If I go with a road chain and the current 33 ring up front that is mtb?

Stick with a 9-speed chain. Also, a short cage ultegra has maximum acceptable cog size of 27T. I'm not saying it won't work with a 32 or 34 tooth cog on a mountain cassette, but it's not designed to.
