View Full Version : Tubeless tire install?

I've got my tires (Bontrager Jones XR tubeless ready), my rims ( Mavic UST's), and a bottle of Stans.
How do you go about installing the tires? I'm new to tubeless, and a little intimidated. I've read that you may have to get some soapy water to help slide the tires onto the rims. I've also read you're not supposed to use tire levers?
The stans goes on after the tires are on the rim right? Do you need to let any/all of the soapy water dry before applying the stans? How much, and where do you apply the stans? Will I need an aircompressor to get enough air into the tire quickly enough? Or can i get it done with a handpump?
Sorry, lots of questions.

Thanks in advance!

I've had two sets of rims that are tubeless, and they work great!

First, the soapy water does help - as does an air-compressor, I've done it a couple of times with a pump, but it's tricky.

You can use tire leavers, I do - the tires are thicker, so they are usually harder to put on.

Put the tire on, put a little soapy water along the edge of the rim (where tire & rim meet).

I usually hit it with the air compressor and inflate to 50 or 60 lbs and while the tire sits with air in it - I then mount the other tire.

Got back to the first, let the air out, put stan's in (either via the valve stem if you got removeable pins from Stans or just open the edge of the tire and dump some in).

Re-inflate, roll/spin the tire a few times and let sit as you go back to do this to the other..

Should be good to go.

I do the first inflate sans the Stan's to kind of seat the tire and rim, seems to go easier the 2nd time (so no stans all over the place).

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the info! The soapy water was the business. Got both tires on without much trouble. I inflated the rear up enough so that the tire seated itself properly. It seems to be holding air really well without the stans.
I'm using a handpump, and I dont think I can get enough air in to get the tire to seat itself. It wont inflate past 25lbs. I think I just need an air compressor...

So now I deflate the tire and squirt stans in along the side of the tire and the rim?

Yea, tubeless tires are the bee's knees. You will love the added traction. The notubes web site has great instructions including video. Even though the directions say not to, I use a CO2 inflater for seating; it seems to work great. Oh, and part of the Stan's experience is getting baptized in the fluid, so you might want to be wearing your grubbies.

Everyone is right on, Tubeless is the greatest. With a Mavic wheel the drop is deep enough that you wont use tire levers. You actually should not use them at all on tubeless as it can damage the bead on the tire. The best way to get it to seat is with an air compressor however CO2 can work in a pinch, kinda speny though. I will tell you from experience, Tubeless rim/tire combo with stans for 5 years and i have only had 1 flat and can run sick nasty low tire pressure.

Good luck, ride on!

Got them installed last night:banana:.
No air leakage yet after one night.
Once I added the stans to the problem wheel it sealed right up and the tires seated themselves nicely. The change from tubed to tubeless is much more noticeable than I would have thought. They roll so much more easily! I think I'm going to be a fan.

Thanks again for the help!
