for years working on four wheelers and sleds that run disc brakes it was common practice to burnish new pads every time they where installed to heat them up and bring temperature to the composites on disc brake materials, while running disc breaks and bikes at speeds well above the norm with the 4dsnowbike kit this last winter breaks were always put to their test and did do some testing on the burnish process witch seem to have a great effect on longevity of the pads, if I did not burnish them from new they didn't seem to last quite as long, and I went though a lot of brakes running speeds of excess of 40 mph on a daily basis, while most times you probably burnish you brake the first time you ride but other times you may not! so you may want to take your new pads and heat them right after installed. simply ride you bike and gently apply breaks on and off hold light pressure for moments to bring your pads to an elevated temperature, on motorized vehicles it was possible to over temp things and harm rotors but on bikes it would be pretty hard I think?

Thanks, Darin.

Is the goal to heat them up, or to polish the pads?

If you are just trying to heat them up, is this something that could be done with a torch? I'm also wondering why that is not done at the factory.

oh the torch thing might be a good test?? but pretty easy to do once you install new and ride 1st time, they probably dont do at factory because they like to sell parts, it was 1st brought to my attention at arctic cat race school, and then few years later they recommended it on all new equipment during set up and replacement,

the goal is to slowly warm the pads so that they do not glaze over

yea it's the burn-in period for them. I usually just find a big ass hill and go down a couple times. works pretty well.
