How tight should my chain be on my ss? Stupid me I removed the rear wheel & now I'm not sure if I have the chain to tight.:banghead: I have very little play in it. I would think that there should be a little, or not.

Going back to my BMX days I heard a few different options. I in the BMX world racers tend to run their chain tight and street, vert, trail etc. run it with little play but not super tight. I would think the latter for trails on an mtb? just my two pennies worth.

I run it as tight as I can get it without it binding. You might also notice that your chain will get tighter depending on what position the cranks are in.

The owners manual for my 1FG says you should be able to move the chain up 6mm and down 6mm for a total of 12mm or about 1/2 inch of total deflection.

A SS chain that is too tight will tear apart, not only you chain, front chainring and rear cog, but start affecting your freewheel bearings and BB bearings.
You might also notice that your chain will get tighter depending on what position the cranks are in.
This is true, usually this means you either have a old biopace chainring, or more likely, your chainring is not centered correctly on your spider. Most people wont notice this with a geared setup, but its much more apparent with a SS setup.

Too tight is way worse than a little loose. ;)
