View Full Version : Tire or tube...or not at all?

So my front tire has this wierd section of about 6-8 inches where it deviates off to one side from the centerline of the tire. It looks like the rim is bent when it spins, but its not the rim the tire was like that when I got the bike (new). I thought it might go away or at least get smaller after a few rides or so but it never did.

Now with warm weather coming up (if it ever stops snowing!) I want this fixed and I'm wondering if this is defect in the tire construction or possibly the tube? Or something entirely different?

Sounds like the bead might not be seated... normally theres a small line around the edge above the bead of the tire. Can you see it all the way around? If not try putting some soapy water on the bead/rim and dump the max psi you can into the tire to see if the bead pops on. I had to put 75 psi into my tire to get the bead to seat all the way around

Sounds good. I'll try that when I get my rim back. I took the tire and tube off before I brought it in, in case I decided to replace the tire it would all be ready for a new one when I get it back.

Well I got the tire off from the rim right now and the rim is at my LBS getting trued. If I put the tire back on when I get the rim back and it still looks goofy I'll post some pics.

OK so I got the rim back and they werent't able to make it 100% staright so I think I'm just gonna buy a new wheelset...I wanted to get new rims this year anyway.

So what kind of stuff should I check for as far as compatability issues go when looking at wheelsets to make sure they will fit my bike?

What kind of brakes are you running? What's the bike?

Basically you would have either disc or V brakes. for v brake you would need v brake compatible rims and for disc, you would need disc compatible hubs. If both your wheels use quick releases than you need a quickrelease hub. Also you would need the correct size wheel, probably 26" but your tire should have a marking saying the diameter.

Yep...I got disc brakes and they are 26" both quick release. Do I need to check hub width or cassette compatability (I have an 8 speed)?

Width should be fine. Make sure you get the correct "interface" either 6 bolt or centerlock for you rotors.

If your hubs are in decent shape, you might want to think about just buying some nice rims and having them laced to your old hubs.

I've made a decision! I think...

I've been thinking about it and I don't feel like my bike is really worth upgrading. It's an Iron Horse Maverick from Dick's Sporting Goods (similar to this one: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=22390&subcategory_ID=3050

My LBS got my rim pretty straight. It's only about 1/16-1/8 of an inch off- center where it's bent. So i figure I'll use it the way it is until I get my Economic Stimulus Payment from the government and use that towards upgrading to a nicer bike!

So yea...I like this idea better

There ya go.....get a new wheel set with a frame and tires and shifters and a frame and bars and all the stuff to go with it.....yes a new bike! Then use the old bike for a spare when the good bike is in the shop or training or winter bike and not care much about it as it keeps riding...use the new bike for good rides ....now you are becoming a biker.....go go go....ride hard.
