I am pleased to announce that we have a new staffer selected! April Bergman will be taking the job, with the transition starting immediately.

For those interested, here is how the process went:

Once we listed the position, we had resume’s sent in and then selected a few core applicants to interview in person. We first had all the finalists complete a position paper (based around the paving of the river bottoms). After reviewing the papers, we called these individuals in for a 30 minute interview. These interviews were held last Thursday at REI.

The finalists were: Matt Larson, April Bergman, Justin Kalemkiarian, Josh Abrahamson and Susannah King. Dan B, Bob S, mara L, Shad H, Ryan L, Doug H and myself were the panel. It was both formal and informal and allowed us all to balance what we thought of their resumes and papers with their personalities. It was truly an honor and a learning process to be a part of this and I can’t thank everyone enough for putting in the extra effort to come out and interview. Dan, thanks again for your coordination efforts!

As you may imagine it is not easy to select one person out of such a strong list of individuals. Let me say that each and every applicant has a lot to offer MORC and I know we would be honored to have their continued involvement. I really do hope to see these individuals come next board election.

Please welcome April as our new staffer, but also thank the other finalists and show them how much we appreciate them as well. I hope all of these individuals, as well as all those who expressed interest in one way or another, will continue to help this organization in whatever capacity they can give.

Thanks everyone for your patience with this process.

Also, thanks again to Brandon for his efforts the past many years. We hope you will also continue on as a MORC volunteer if at all possible.

Lastly, thanks again to Scott Thayer for having the original vision of a staffer position.

Thanks to all the candidates who took the time and effort to apply to the staffer position. It's awesome to see there are so many intelligent, passionate people who want to step up and make MORC organization. :)

Each of you deserve a huge round of applause, or maybe we could get you all together, and I will buy a round for you all. :D

I sure hope so.

Thanks everybody! I'm really excited to get started on everything. MORC is such a great organization and such a great group of people from the president down to the members, and everyone else who might not have a membership but rides on group rides or checks the forums. Speaking of, if you're not a member, why not join up? I need stuff to do! ;)

The panel interview WAS grueling and intense...I thought there'd be two people and there ended up being 7! Plus, the interviews were basically right in between the sock aisles at REI, so THAT was distracting. Throw in Bob's hypercolor(TM) Hawaiian shirt, Mara's and Shad's constant humming of the national anthem (in harmony, no less!), and Doug taking a call from his financial advisor in the middle of my response to one of his questions (something like "If you were a set of clipless pedals, what kind would you be?"), and I thought I was toast.

But it all came out in the wash, and here I am, making bad jokes on Easter Sunday, putting off shoveling the sidewalks.

Everyone else who applied and interviewed for this deserves a drink or something -- you guys are all awesome!

It's gonna be a great year for MORC, and I'm really happy I get to have a bigger part in making it even better than it already is. :)

Happy Easter and Spring everyone!

April

You probably don't want to impeach me from the MORC board, just as a moderator on the forums so you can go pissing in everyone's tea without any interruption......:p

Manhole covers are round for the opposite reason that interior mounted access covers for a vessel are oval. If you haven't figured it out before, that hint should do it.

It's not about the answer... for most people this question is beyond their knowledge and experience. It's a common interview question to see how a candidate reacts and how well they think on their feet. How did they come up with an answer, how well did they explain it, and how did they rule out other answers are what the interviewers care about...

ANSWER(S): A round cover cannot fall into the hole it is covering. Also... round covers are easier for one person to move (roll), and they are easy to place over the hole since the corners don't need to be aligned.

My answer was stupid. And I feel stupid for not knowing the correct answer.

There are no stupid answers, only stupid questions.

Did I pass the test?

Don't sweat it. This isn't the kind of question that anyone but maybe a ME is going to be able to "figure out". The only way any of us are able to get it right is to have already seen the answer.

I'll bet that isn't actually the *real* answer anyway, but more of a bonus side-effect of the original design, which was actually done for the convenience of whoever built the first one.

But for future interviews, I'm guessing that a good trick would be to fake that you don't know the answer and act like you are thinking it through. If they are going to ask you a question to watch you squirm, you may as well act like you are squirming.

I still maintain that it was due to a forward-thinking engineer that realized American waistbands would expand so the covers were designed with 21st century ergonomic demands in mind...:jumpy:
