I have Hays 9's I really like them & the price was $89 per end. I believe I bought them from jenson.

How much are you looking to spend? What bike do you have and are the wheels disc compatible?

The best mechanical disc brakes are the Avid BB7's, and you usually can find them fairly inexpensive on sale (I think I saw $69)
Next - I've seen the Magura Marta SL's for fairly low, light and should work good. I think Jenson just had them for $75
Avid Juicy 7's - aren't bad at all either, I have them on one of my bikes and like the adjustments.
I really like the Magura Louise FR that I have - seem to just be set and are solid.
Read/heard many good things about Hopes. But they are usually pricey.
I'd stay away from Hayes I have yet to have any good luck with them (out of the 3 I've tried).

If you are trying to keep cost down, go with Avid BB7 Mechanicals. You can usually get them for about $50 per wheel. They are easy to install/adjust, and you can use your existing levers.
Edit. Dirk beat me to it by 1 minute.

If the bike has integrated shifter/brake levers (dual control), then mechanical discs are going to keep the cost down. You will be able to use the existing brake levers.
If you have dual control (for V brakes) and want hydraulic brakes, you will need to get new shifters to boot.

A quick google search shows this for BB7s at $50. If you look around, you might find them cheaper. You will probably also need to buy some cables.

Of course, if you want some help, then I recommend your favorite LBS.

If you can hook me up with Marta sl's for $75 I AM SO THERE!, probably mean the Julie SL though.
I like my saints, I probably am in a real minority but simple and cheap.
I am waiting for my flower power Hope brakes to show up soon.

Don't forget the wheels...If your hubs aren't disc ready, then you're definitely looking to spend at least 300 to do the switch.

You can't go wrong with Avid Juicy 7 brakes, they offer good power and modulation. I rode with Formula Oros last year and they felt great too. Avid BB7 mechanicals are plenty powerful for the price but lack the modulation of hydraulics and are heavier than other high end brakes. You can't go wrong with Shimano XTs or XTRs they have plenty of power and modulation but they use a proprietary mineral oil that could be hard to find in a pinch and mineral oil also has problems in extreme cold weather - know of any cold weather anywhere? Same goes for magura- mineral oil is not cold climate friendly. Hayes Stokers have a great lever design and work well. I would avoid the original Hayes HFX MAGS as they have a wooden on/off feel and brakes have come a long way since then. Hope brakes are beautiful but you're paying for the bling not necessarily the performance.

I just recently upgraded to hydro disk brakes (hayes nine) from mechanical disks and i really notice the difference in stopping power.

if you dont like hydro or just want a change i really love avid BB7's, the only brakes the will stop not matter what the conditions are, they also do not require any new juice or ... ex

Avid BB5 or BB7. BB7 Gives you more ball berrings than BB5 but costs more. Easy to adjust/fix etc. Dont mess with hydros. Just decide how much you want to spend then decide on the 5's or 7's.
