How much are you looking to spend? That seems to be a bigger determining factor.

Light and strong means $$$. I9's (http://www.industrynine.net/official/allmountain.html) with stans rims would be a good place to start.

Dan, are you turning into a weigh weenie?

Weight weenie, not really but I have enough bikes now where I can have an anorexic bike and not care when I break her.

Quoting Keith as the person that said that is like saying specialized invented the mountain bike.

Stan's wouldn't happen, I-9's with DT 4.2 probably will though.

I ordered the I9's with the stans rim for my race bike a few weeks ago. I can't wait to get them. I liked the all mountain wheels to and that's what I would have gone with had it been for anything other than my full on race bike. Definately not cheap though. I would also look at the bontrager rythym elites. I have heard really good things about them and they are a wider rim that's still pretty light.

Bontrager Race lites. Enough said!

STOCK. 29'er????? I went w/ American Classic for my race wheels because I'm silly and light enough. If 26'er wait til you see the new Crank Bros wheels. Yep, Bontrager and Crossmax are sweet too.

Save money. Lace up your own? I know you know what's out there...

I dream of lighter wheels someday as well. I tend to be more loving and gentle towards my round things despite my size.

I want to keep the spoke count up and invest in some nice hubs. I'm thinking a traditional 32 spoke set-up. Then if ever I go 29er I can keep the hubs and lace them to 29er rims.

I think this sums up my feelings.

Went with American Classics last year. Happy so far.

I have a set of the Bontrager Race Lites and although they are nice and the hubs are smooth they are heavier than bontrager says. The Rhythm Elites are the exact same weight but are a little cheaper and they have more of an all mountain rim width. It's supposed to out perform the race lites by quite a bit.

I have the 2004 American Classic MTN 350 wheelset. They were a suggested weight of 1450g for the set(I think now AMclassic claims this wheelset to be below 1400g). I love the traditional lacing pattern, deep profile rims, and high flange hubs. However the two downsides I've had to these are constant adjustments to the bearings, and a very soft braking surface. Otherwise for the $ these wheels are pretty damn nice. Or the Mavic Crossride wheelset is a good deal(right around $200) and a good quality wheelset. Disc or non-disc you have the option to do either.

I9 w/ DT 4.2 is a nice match up and found them for $700. Still not on the cheap, but these things are great wheels.

Bob, As for the internals on the hub they are built out of a hardened tool steel which is suppose to be stronger than any other hub out on the market. I9 has yet to see one fail, then again you have yet to mash these hubs. ;) If I was back in MN I would lend you a pair for a season and let you do your worst.

I9s are nice but not very special at the end of the day. Some DT240s built up with decent rims and light(ish) spokes could be t3h s3x for your project.

Stan is a doosh (sic) but his rims are worth the $ - you will not find anything that builds up lighter and stiffer that is purpose-built t00bless.

I understand that you can now also get I9's with "normal" spoke holes.

You can, but they are as or more expensive than CK and Hadley and don't have anywhere near the time in the field or color options and good availability.

I understand that you can now also get I9's with "normal" spoke holes.

Yep They have normal hubs now. Drive is the same as their originals. Would agree with soup that they don't have 10+ years under their belt in terms of people mashing on them. Honestly if they could hold up to your abuse they might just be the hub to have. Only time will tell. Current lead time for black hubs is about 6 weeks.
