I know all the primo brands of trainers but I don't think I will use one enough to justify cost...
Does anyone have experience or input with a cheaper alterative (that does not sound like an airplane launching in my living room) or have a used one for sale at a resonable price?

I use a cycleops fluid trainer. Cost like $300 in stores, but can get online for $230. This is a really nice solid trainer. You get what you pay for. This is my first season using a trainer, it can get boring, but it is nice to be ready come spring.
Also, it is nice to add a trainer tire for $40 that doesn't leave any rubber residue. A plus because you don't wear out your main tire you usually use.

I agree with Nate.
When I bought a trainer I didn't think I would use it enough to justify the cost. I figured I would only use it a couple times a years since it's so boring and I like to xc ski in the winter. Because of this I bought the cheap performance fluid trainer and hate it. I wish I would have shelled out and got a decent one like the cycleops. A good trainer should last nearly a lifetime so spend the extra money and get something good.

Scan Craigslist. We picked up a really nice brand new Cycleops for a great deal.

I just use an old tire that is almost worn out or has a lot of cuts. Or, just get a cheap $15 wire bead tire. $40 seems like a lot.

+3. I first bout a performance one and after realizing my mistake bought a Curt Kinnetic. There is a clear performance differece. Validated by the fact my wife complains every time I swap the performance one over to her and take the Curt. :D
