It has to be in good/great shape, as I would like to make it visible in my house. I like the looks of 70's (and earlier) track bikes, but I am open to anything. If anyone has one, or knows of anyone with one, let me know. Does anyone know if there is much a market in old race bikes?

Pics are good too!

how about a Phillips or AMF Hercules, B.C.C. brands from before the 1960 merge with Raleigh and before Tube Industries bought them all out? Both are three speeds and metallic blue. originial condition and ridable. they mostly need some cleaning.

How much do you want to spend ? I might be willing to get rid of a CHICAGO SCHWINN from the early 40's ? I here these are rare becasue the chicago plant didnt last long before moving. Read up on chicago schwinns at sheldon browns site

Thanks, but I am looking for something more along the race (race worthy) lines. Something like this Merckx (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Eddy-Merckx-Molteni-from-1973_W0QQitemZ200194461395QQihZ010QQcategoryZ98084 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) (btw, that dude spent a fortune on pictures) Or this Pin (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Pinarello-Montello-Dura-Ace-Campagnolo_W0QQitemZ120214274687QQihZ002QQcategory Z98084QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I would like an old pre-derailuer bike, but not opposed to other ideas...thanks

I have a 1980 Peugeot that might fit the bill; it looks a lot like the attached bike. Email for more details and photos of the actual bike if interested.

The Schwinns from the 40s are a bit rare because of 2 events: 1. WWII forced bicycle manufacturers to make other things, or fold because raw material prices skyrocketed. 2. The Schwinn plant had a big fire in early 40s, so there are a few years that they didn't make any bikes.

Chances are, your bike will be from the mid to late 30s, or later 40s. I think 1941-1946 or so were years that they didn't make bikes, IIRC.

Yeah, I likes me some old Schwinns. :D

If I were decorating my house, I'd like to have a track bike from the late 1800s.

I had researched it once before and there I found a way to date the bike...I found it to be 1942

If it's a '42, it would have been one of the last bikes until 1946 or so. If bigpeddler doesn't buy it, let me know, I might be interested. It would look good with my 1941 Dayton military bike.

I will, and I am not sure that 42 is the exact year, but it is 41-42. It is rideable and very clean. I will snap some shots like I said and post em up this weekend

Unfortunately, I don't know of any around for sale. A guy I know had one at one time, but I think he sold it a while back. I don't know what they arew worth either, but I'd guess a lot!

Here you go...my old Chicago Schwinn

Hate to break it to you Gus, but that Schwinn isn't from the 40s. Judging by the Schwinn typeface, it is from the 80s, unless someone put newer decals on it. In any case, I'd bet the oldest that bike is would be sometime in late 60s.

The serial numbers can be tricky to decode, because some numbers overlap with old serial numbers, but the letter designation changed.

What model is it? Breeze?

Collegiate, and I was wrong...as it were I had found out it was 60s but maybe it is later than that

It could be 60s, but the decal may be newer. Although the sprocket pattern doesn't look like the 60s Schwinn pattern, looks like a newer style.
