I couldn't find much in the way of info on the class distinctions. Are the "sport" and "citizen" classes the lower classes?

Sounds like fun. As soon as I get a bike that fits i'll check out some sort of race.

Yup citizen is typically where one would start. Ran two of them last year, lots o fun. It appears that sport is a way wide open field, so slow fat slobs like myself could enter a sport race, and still maybe have a few people to race with at the back of the pack. The main advantage being getting to run more of the course and a longer race.
Where is the sand bagger class, that is the one for me.

I agree, will someone just tow me on my bike behind them?
I'm in if Dan V is willing...
After this winter, may be able to tow you to a few wins.

Do not enter citizen class at Buck Hill unless you want to risk being bested by a 10 year old. I am not saying that would happen to you, but it has happened.:crazy2:

Not if you pull out the Road Rash-style chain whipping as he rides by. Throw in a kick for good measure.

You beat me to it! Though I wouldn't have put the smiley thing in denoting sarcasm. It's a fact.
Different discussion, but the MNSCS should force people to move up to the next class (once 18+) if you top ten a few times or finish in the top 10 or 15 (of sport... top 5-10 of citizen since the fields are smaller) over the year.
I step up a class if I pull a first in a race, if there is a class to go up to.
Sure was fun at that dodgeball game against 3rd graders though.

I ran Citizen all last year. Never won but had a couple of 2nds and 3rds. I'm moving to Sport this year not necessarily because I belong in Sport but I got tired of the shortened and "dumbed down" Citizen courses. Often the best (read technical) part of the trail was excluded from the Citizen course. I understand and support the need to do this, but it's something to consider if you like to ride technical terrain. You may want to start in Sport even if in means a near back of pack finish.
Regarding moving up classes. When I used to ride moto with District 36 in NorCal. There was a points process that moved you up a class when your points total reached a certain level. More points paid for higher finishes at a race. I couple of wins or a string of good finishes moved you to the next class. Seemed to work well although obviously requires a bunch of book keeping. The "peer pressure" didn't hurt either. Nobody wanted to be stuck in C class with all the "squids"

@ one time MNSCS did force people to move up. That topic came up last year for the RD's and they got scared. If you really want it keep pushing for it. It took forever to bring back the team comp but it happened.

Make that a "she" my daughter loves when she flies past the guys and talks about it all the way home. Although she will be 11 this year.:jumpy:

Are you thinking each age group or the overall finishers? Just wondering for technicality sake.
I guess I may be a sandbagger because I came in first in my age group (womens class) in citizen last year and plan to stay in citizen again this year.
But with that being said. I was one of only two people in my age group and my overall finishes were in the back half of the group overall.
My reasons for not moving up: I am not ready yet .
Oh Yeah, and that almost 11 year old got me once last year at the Welch Jam. Shes Fast!!

SANDBAGGER!!! Just kidding. With the smaller fields of citizen (plus the added difficulty of some sections in sport courses) I could see never making it mandatory to move up.
Part what might be keeping some of the top citizen riders in citizen is the huge difference between the citizen and sport in both field size and top of the field speed. I can say from experience that it's intimidating hitting singletrack ahead of another wave that you know is going to have a half-dozen super fast dudes that aren't going to appreciate getting stuck behind a middle to back of the pack singlespeeder.
I'm going to play with different classes next year. I've been running Sport Clyde and have been doing well. I've been afraid of getting spanked by the "skinny" class riders. I would ideally ride in a Comp. Clyde class if there was such a thing. However, as people said the top of the Sport class is so tough, might as well ride comp.

Dang it, Dana!! You're racing Citizen again this year?!?! I definatley will be coming in last in our age group now!! LOL!! I hear the citizen courses lack the technicallity that I love so dearly...but I will be racing that class cuz I am slower than a fricken snail!!!!!
