Has anyone been on MDH in May? What is it like? Muddy?

if the rain is as normal may can be rainy---if it rains on the mdh it is muddy. almost no vegetation to absorb moisture but if the sun comes out it dries quickly. If the rain is more than an inch you will have gumbo wheels (dirt sticking on a minimum of 4 inches thick) Most rain in nodak happens in april and may but april is usually the wettest.

Once the rain is no longer an issue expect very rough trail in some sections that go through cattle pastures. Cows don't know to stay off the trail when muddy so expect a lot of bone shaking riding over sun-dried hoof prints. :)
Rumor has it the best time to go is September because the rough patches have been smoothed out by riders.
And, I'd like to second the notion of avoiding the trail if it's muddy. If you've never experienced it, trust us: the trail is 100% impossible to ride if it's muddy gumbo. All it takes is about 1 1/2 rotations of your tire to pick up enough sticky, heavy gumbo that it jams against your frame and your wheels no longer spin. Nasty!

Never been in May. Spent several days there in late Sept early Oct several years ago.
Make sure you ride is dialed before you head out. Bring plenty of spare parts too. We drove 3 hours one way one night just to get some extra tubes as the local shop was closed for the season.
Awesome trial. I'll never forget the bovine stamped we ended up in the middle of. Pretty dangerous. Wish my fork hadn't died before we even started. I rode 90 miles on 5mm of travel. Ultimately cracked the head tube on the rig too. Rumor has it I should have stayed home a read a book...
