View Full Version : Widest tires for a Stumpjumper?
I have a an old hardtail Stumpjumper with Judy XC fork that I'm using in the winter. I'm guessing that it is from the early to mid 90's.
Does anybody know how big I can go on the tires for winter riding??
Thanks.

I have a 2.2 on the rear of my '02 and would not go any larger. I just measured the distance from my previous tire to the chainstay multiplied it by two added it to the current tire width and subtracted .250" for safe clearance. It put me in the 2.2 - 2.25 inch range, so I played it safe with the 2.2 because no one likes a rubbing tire. I hope that helps or makes sense.

2.6 is pretty wide for a Stumpy. I'd measure the width of your chainstays to make sure it'll accomodate that wide of a tire.

If the bike is from the 90's I'd venture to guess that a 2.1-2.3 would be pushing it so far as fit (and it would have to be a very small 2.3). It also depends on the width of your rim and the actual size of the tire. Some tires run small for a given size and some run big. Hope this helps. Run what fits adjust tire pressure and go have fun.

Try a studded tire in the 2.0 range. That would be the ideal choice for winter riding.
Thanks for the advice guys. It's sad that it's come to this, but it looks like I will need to build a bike that will accomodate bigger tires.
Bummer... :D

I was kind of surprised that I could fit these on my trek 4500. I ordered them because they were so cheap and figured I would just sell them if they didnt fit- but they worked great. I think I even have enough clearance to stud them. I have a 2005 J1 fork on my bike- not sure how that compares to yours.

Your bike is too pretty. The neighbor kids would steal it before I ever got to use it. :D
