View Full Version : Possible scam?
Has anyone who has posted an ad in the classifieds been contacted by someone with the email address "scott_item_investmentcompany@yahoo.com" or "mr scott moen"? I just posted a few items in the classifieds and have gotten several responses from this would-be buyer. The reason why I ask is because I had a friend fall victim to something like this. My friend got his cashiers check for an amount way over what the agreed upon selling price was, cashed it and sent his frame along with the extra money back to India. Turns out, the check was a fraud and he had to pay back the money he had received for his frame and was left with no frame. Totally S.O.L. I am thinking this could be another scam of this type.
The writer's written English is really bad and he says that "his client" will pay with a cashiers check and the items will be shipped to India. He didn't ask for the size of my frame because it wasn't on the ad earlier or any other questions so I am a little suspicious. After all, who buys a bunch of high-end bike parts and a frame without asking any questions at all. Especially, the size of the frame, etc...
Please contact me if you know anything about this.
Thanks,
Kyle

Anything too good to be true probably is... and I typically don't sell to anyone outside of the US or Canada. I also wait to give checks a chance to clear before sending merchandise... or better yet, require something like Paypal use and wait until the $ hits your bank account before sending anything. If they are against doing something that makes you comfortable they aren't worth dealing with.

Just depositing those cashiers' checks can be risky. Don't fall for it.

Ordering something & paying more than the amount & asking for a cash rebate is a well known scam. Not quite up there with the Nigerian letter, but close. Without even reading anything about the inducements, I can assure you this is a scam.

That's a pretty standard scam on the Internet. Someone will, for whatever reason, offer to send you a cashiers check/money order for several hundred above what your asking price is. You just have to send them most of the extra money back, but of course keep a little bit extra for the hassle.
The issue is, I believe, that with cashier checks you are the one who is stuck paying when the thing bounces, which can still take 7-10 days, if not longer.
yeah, I think I will listen to everyone here and just walk from this one. Thanks! I just want to make sure other people don't fall for this one.

Scams are everywhere, you just have to be aware and watch it. I'm dealing with a deadbeat buyer on ebay right now, I'm just waiting for the scam action to start up.

Get the cashier's check and wait for it to clear....or have the bank check the authenticity of it.

Paypal or nothing. That way you're covered against fraud.

PayPal is NOT 100% fool proof either. I insist on cash, bank check, check or postal money order.
I had a scammer try to buy my truck. I told him I'd put the 'extra' money in the glovebox for him when he came to pick it up in person.
Good luck with your sales.
Please be a good citizen. Tell him to send the cashiers check, In return send him a package that is roughly the size of a bike frame box, instead of the frame send a few dead carp and some dog poo. Try to rig it so that it falls out on the floor when he opens it.

Don't send stuff to India. That's a terrible idea.
When I worked at a golf course I had a guy call and try to order something like 6 sets of high-end Callaway golf clubs to be sent to Compton, CA. He was going to give me a credit card number. I simply told him that he would have to call back and talk to the manager. He never did.
Funny thing was that his scam worked at another course nearby. What kind of idiot would fall for that?
