Iowa Counties Will Discuss Crawford County RAGBRAI Ban
The attorney for the Iowa State Association of Counties says an upcoming meeting is the direct result of Crawford County's decision to ban RAGBRAI.

The ban came after the county had to payout $350,000 to the family of a man who died when the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa came through Crawford County.

David Vestal says ISAC will discuss the ban and possible legislation to exempt counties from liability.

"I think the focus of our attention is gonna be on whether the legislature should step in and limit the liability of the Crawford Counties of the world if they put themselves on the line and say that they'll act as a host for RAGBRAI. Should they in turn be protected from these sort of law suits," David Vestal said.

The group will meet with RAGBRAI representatives, bike retailers, engineers, and officials from other counties in Des Moines on November 19th.

This is bike related. Not sure why it was posted in the Non-Biking Discussion area, so I moved it here.

I wasnt sure where to put it. I thought the non biking thread was safest bet. Thanks for moving it though.

There is no way the RAGBRAI "ban" will last. That is just a tactic to draw attention to this type of semi-frivilous lawsuit. In Iowa this is like banning apple pie.

The Ragbrai route changes every year.

I had to google map Crawford county. Its where Denison IA is. If the ban holds, move the route. When the local businesses miss out on the boon that is Ragbrai they can thank the jurors that let this guy win the lawsuit.:incazzato::banghead:

How about blaming the family of the victim for filing the lawsuit.? I don't blame the county - they lost $350,000. Let's see - extend hospitality to cyclist - get sued when one crashes, ban the event next year. Sounds smart to me. If someone sued MORC after a MORC sponsored event do you think they would still sponsor the event?

The outcome of this is going to be indemnification of the counties for these types of events. This will require a state law - which I think is in the works.
