I have plans right now to tour out west after i graduate in June. So far the small tours to duluth and redwing have been great but my 1x1 just isnt going to cut it for a tour over 1000 miles. I was wondering if it would be wise to buy the stock long haul trucker, or build one up myself? Have any of you rode a stock LHT?

build ...I say it always better to build your own...

Frame $420
Bike $985

I think the bike is definetly worth it. The parts spec that they use is actually pretty good for what you'll be using it for. The amount of money that you would spend to build this same bike from scratch would be insanely more expensive. You are basically getting all the parts for about $560. I have a crosscheck and I love it. Just sold a Long Haul Trucker to a good customer of mine and he's going the build it yourself route just cause he wants to build it a bit different from the stock bike.

Would it pay to buy the bike and e-bay and replace the parts you want different?

You could go either way. All riders are different and some are willing to pay the price to custom build a bike. If you custom build it, you can go as crazy as you want to.....maybe make it a good deal lighter too.

But the stock bike is spec'ed quite well. It will certainly do what you want it to and more. I rode one in mid summer for about a week and did 70 plus miles on it on one of the days. I loved it.....it was super comfortable to ride and it backs up it's name, you can ride forever on that thing. In the end I purchased a Crosscheck. I wanted something that was a bit more sporty feeling when it came to cornering. It's fairly good on the long rides, but not nearly as comfortable as the Long Haul Trucker. I got the stock Crosscheck which has many of the same components as the stock Trucker. My parts have held up great....I have had zero issues with it and it has a good amount of miles on it. I am very impressed with the cranks.....I didn't think I would want to keep them, but so far, they shift great and have not gotten lose or started creaking at all......something I almost always have issues with since I am abusive on my bikes. Yes, I abuse the Crosscheck too......it airs quite nicely.....:)

Well I have decided to go with the custom built LHT. Now my question is what bike shop should i build it up at? The shop here is filled with a bunch of clowns. I'd like to go to a shop where they will build the bike around me so it fits perfectly.

Is Schultzies still around.;) (a little old school Northfield bike humor)

I like Freewheel and One On One. If I were to do a bike built up I would probably go through One On One. Hollywoods supposed to be really good and may be a little more convenient for you.
